Update....there was a 1/4" scratch on glass....but it was a FILTER....the seller didn't mention a filter so perhaps didn't even know there was a filter on the lens....
A good luck holiday gift....a 180/2.8 Nikkor ED pristine glass is now in the bag!

I'm so glad to hear all turned out well for you in the end. Few weeks ago I was tempted by a rare lens: Mamiya 24/4. The seller had 100% positive feedbacks but only 40 ratings. As it's an expensive lens (over 1K$) I refrained from bidding.
Long live the B&S forum!
Happy shooting,
Yakim.

if you payed via PayPal you can claim them about this case, you have a chance to return money if you claim not later than 60 days

I always save a copy of the listing when I purchase off ebay. I once had to pay claim for two Oly lenses that I received in poor condition. I emailed Ebay with the page and a few pics, they refunded my money within 24 hours.

paypal, these days sides 99.9% of the time with the buyer. If you list something that is broken, you can't be vague. You have to say exactly what is wrong. You can say stuff like, I'm not sure if it works, etc., can't test, but it is unclear and deemed "deceptive" this guy was just an utter douchebag. Pardon my french, but sellers like that only have the worst thing coming back at them... bad karma.
@racevedo, what happened finally? did you have to send the lens back to get refunded? or did paypal just refund you out straight? Sometimes the seller will hold back from hitting the "refund" button. If you send back the lens, send it via a signature required means, or trackable, like UPS ground, fedex, etc., paypal needs to see confirmed delivered.

My question - does this look possible to salvage and restore? The blades have oil so it will definitely require servicing. I haven't tried to clean the glass at all.
I haven't read everything to see if you have tried yet or not but that doesn't look like fungal growth on the glass. If it's not then the chances of cleaning it are good. If whatever it is has indeed affected the coating and it's a MC then it's just gone with no way for a user to salvage it. The paint on the barrel looks bubbled from moisture tho so that's shot. You could remove the rubber, lightly sand with 2000 grit W&D paper, mask off the glass and paint it with a high quality spray-paint. If you do that keep the can a bit further away than the instructions recommend. In prep extend everything and then tuck a small rubber band in each crack where the moving parts overlap. Tie a thin thread to the rubber band first so you can remove it while the paint is still wet - which will be needed so as not to leave ridges. Do one section at a time and mask everything else off. If the markings are etched into the barrel surface you can get a tiny brush and repaint those as well. If not you can use inkjet decal media and reprint the markings. I've been really surprised at the accuracy with which I can print to critical measurements on just a home ink-jet.
My question is why would you buy anything on e-bay that have multiple userish looking pictures of the item?
That's what I like about Yahoo auctions in Japan. They guarantee exchange satisfaction and handle the moneys. I think there's a $10,000.00 limit through that service tho.

eBay decided the case in my favor, issued a UPS return label and automatically refunded the entire amount to my paypal account once it was tracked as being delivered back to the seller. It required persistence though with regards to customer service escalation with eBay. They needed me to call in and apologized for any delays as their department had been very backlogged.

Assuming that you paid using PayPal, i would start a dispute right away. I only had one bad incident in ebay and after some time providing evidence and exchanging emails I got a positive resolution and a refund. And copied the page from ebay and the "deceiving" description that was posted.
