Questions:

I cannot find the Zeiss lens anywhere, looked it up (didn't know about it before) and at least one poster said it had worse contrast and sharpness then the 24-105. Thoughts?

Which Zeiss? The 24-85? They're not too hard to find used (it's not produced anymore) in the C/Y mount. Sharpness and contrast aren't a problem for the lens, but if you don't like the looks of Zeiss wide angle primes, particularly in the corner, that will go double for this lens between 24 and 50. The 35-70 is a little gem and is also fairly easy to come by used. The added macro function is handy. I disagree that you'll see improved contrast on the 24-105. Sharpness depends on what you're shooting and how you're doing it simply because of the IS, but with good light and normal shutter speeds, I think either Zeiss has the advantage.

How easy is it to convert Olympus lenses (which are fantastic and has often made me wish for a better Olympus body) into canon mounts? Can the same be done with Pentax?

There are good adapters available for both. I don't think there's an Oly OM prime that can't be adapted. Pentax lenses depend on the mount and the lens, but M42, PK, and PK-A are typically possible with some possible extra work necessary. None of the 4/3s or M4/3s mounts from either company are adaptable, to the best of my knowledge.

I am also curious which 3 primes people would travel with, same budget, assuming you already have the 50 1.4, and might also bring the 24-105.

If it were me, I would want one high quality prime for each of these uses that optimized IQ while still keeping the weight low. So if I had $8,000 and had your purposes in mind I would go with:

5D MKII
T1i

Olympus OM 21mm f/2
Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4
Voigtlander APO 180 f/4

The other advantage of this kind of setup is that none of the gear looks overly flashy. If your travels put you in areas where theft might be a problem or in traveling conditions where water or droppage could occur, you might instead ask your question in terms of cheap but high quality gear that is also light.

There are many manual focus lenses for <$300 each that are great at most focal lengths.

If humidity or rains or water are in your future, then weather sealing might be a big concern.

Keep in mind that more $ do not necessarily yield better results, and the subject and composition are more important than any glass. You will likely be surrounded by plenty of worthy subjects. Don't stress about the hardware.

The 24-85 Zeiss is an N mount lens, not a c/y mount. The N mount lenses can be converted to a full functional Canon EF mount including auto focus. There is a Zeiss 28-85 in c/y mount. While it "might" be better than the 24-85 N at the long end (IMHO, if it is better than it is not in any noticeable or significant way), the 24-85 N "wipes the floor" (to borrow colorful fan boy language) with the 28-85 at the short end. it is, in fact quite comparable to the Zeiss 35-70 c/y mount lens, but far more useful -- wider and longer and fully auto on canon rather than full manual. Of course, it will cost you 2-4 times as much as the 35-70.

Ah, yes, my apologies. I was thinking of the 28-85.

Call me weird, but my dream travel kit would be a lot smaller and lighter than anything mentioned in this thread.

to the OP:

Travel Kit: Panasonic G1, plus
G Vario 7-14 f4; the 9-18 Oly; OR G Vario 14-45 f3.5-5.6 OIS. Alternatively, the 20/1.7, and get close or walk away; very small and unobtrusive kit
G Vario 45-200 f4-5.6 OIS in side pocket

Travel? ONE cheap body, and a couple of throw-away lenses. If you know how to expose properly, this will do just fine whether for print or web and, if you lose the kit, or it gets stolen, you will have plenty of money to replace it with (assuming you kept that safe!).

I travel all the time for my work. If the work is photography, I usually take a D700 and whatever pair of lenses the job needs (for example, next job in Australia is architecture, so 14-24 and 24 PC-E). I might throw in the 60/2.8 macro for details.

If for John Deere, then D700, 80–200/2.8, 35–70/2.8, and the second D700 body, and lots of batteries, because there are no excuses out in the bush for gear failure when shooting machines that run over $1,000,000. If I were shooting one of the harvesting machines for a brochure, I might take the 24 PC-E as well.

If products, then Elinchrom and softbox, paper, one body, 45 PC-E, and 60/2,8 or 105/2.8 VR

It's all about knowing what the client wants. The point is, I don't like to lug gear around dangerous locations any time, frankly, and if I were doing humanitarian work, I'd be saving money for that. In that situation, for me, the image-making would be coming second to the main work. I think the Panasonic is the kit to go with; I have one and it's a lot of camera for the money. hth, kl

1Ds MK III
Olympus E-3

Sigma 300-800 2.8
Leica 70-180 2.8 APO
Contax N 17-35 (Converted)
Canon 85 1.2

I'd probably put a 2x in the bag to use with the Sigma on the E-3 ... so I could save on air fare shooting between cities.

I think I'm still in budget (it is a government contract right ?)

I tend to favor versatility over total weight, so most of my selections are fairly "robust" relative to other's suggestions. I also happen to own all of them except for the 14-24. Hopefully my G adapter shipped in the latest batch...

5D Mk II
40D
Nikon 14-24
Contax N 24-85
100-400 IS (paired with the 40D for lots of reach)
Rokkor 58 or 135 F2 (though the latter might break the budget)
