Illegal alien is a very detrimental term in my book. If you are thinking they are competing with you for jobs and sucking on our social system, think again. Unless, you're out of job and willing to pick berries for $2/hour or scrub the toilet at Walmart at night for $3/ hr, then you have nothing to worries about. Sleep tight.
Not really sure about your last statement. It's hard for the "illegal alien" to be proud of their heritage don't you think?
Being an immigrant myself and working to help immigrants and refugees of all walks of life to settle in this country, I don't think I would consider myself a racist.

Although not Photography related, I know a lot of FM people are probably Audio enthusiasts also -
I was at a garage sale a few years ago and noticed a nice set of speakers supporting a door being used as a table holding typical garage sale items. As the sale was about to end, I asked the people having the sale how much they wanted for the speakers. I thought at first he said $250.00, but he said $2.50 which I gladly paid, and he even helped me carry the 75 pound speakers to my van.
What makes this a sweet deal is that the speakers were Karlson X-15 models, which are somewhat of a Cult Classic among audiophiles, on top of that, both speakers had single digit serial numbers, dating them to the early 1950's which makes finding a pair of matched speakers ( Mono not Stereo was the norm back then ) even more rare. Hooked them up to my Mac reciever when I got back home and they sounded sweet!
As for my best Photographic Sweet Deal, I won an auction for a 210mm Schneider F:2.8 Xenotar, circa 1960 - LNIB for right around $1000. Currently using this lens on my 4 x 5 with Betterlight scanback, better than any of my more current LF lenses. In communications with Schneider, I found out that only 5 of these lenses had been made on special order, so I assume this was a hand assembled lens, that went through more than the usual quality checks.
1955 Minox B with tripod and case for $25. I guy I worked with in DC in the late 70s said he'd bought it in NYC in the 50's. He'd take the train to NYC to see a show, and while there play the numbers (pre-legal lottery). One time he hit the number and had a lot of money to blow and bought the Minox on a whim and only used it a couple times.
The most interesting recovery of lost/stolen gear happened a few years earlier. I'd been working on a trial basis with a photographer on Capitol Hill and answered the door one day an found a gun in my face. The guy was mostly looking for money but on the way out grabbed a bag with a Hasselblad and 1000mm lens. It was a rare model Hassy with a focal plane shutter. A few years later scanning the classified ads in the Wash Post I saw the same combination advertised and called him up and he was able to recover it.
I'm still waiting for that f/2.8 300mm I left in the Home Depot parking lot to show up though

Working with Minox negatives is much easier using a dedicated Minox enlarger.
Clever little camera with linked selenium meter that didn't batteries and built-in sliding ND and yellow filters. The beads on the chain correspond to focus distance markings for sharp close-ups when copying documents. The tripod is also very clever. The two smaller legs nest inside of the larger one for storage, then the cable release slides into the center and screw-lock in place. The cradle for the camera folds down over the legs and the whole thing fits in the green case in the photo. The problem was the negatives where so small, the same as 8mm movie frames, the IQ wasn't great.
Managed to pick up a mint 135L from a local pawn shop for $300. He had asked for $400 but I offered 3 and he took it. - about a year ago. Then I traded on CL with another photographer for a mint 24-70L that I still use. $300 for a 24-70L is a good price in my book!
ACElkin - a member of the Mighty Karlson Army stands up for a Roll Kall! ;-) Good score on those. I've found plenty of audio scores too, not Karlsons but other stuff. Same with photography - so many good deals it's hard to even keep track of them anymore. It's all about always looking. Luck isn't found, it's made.
I bought a Minolta SR-M (very rare motorised Minolta camera) from a garage sale for A$200. Sold it on ebay about a month later for US$1200, which was about A$2000 at the time. Used that cash to buy glass!
Actually if you used Minopan/APX 25 or Kodak Techpan the IQ is quite impressive from these cameras, the Complan/Minox lenses are superb. I've shot Minox IIIs, B, C and EC. I ran into problems when I went to film scanning, then the negative size was too small... in the darkroom, 5x7's were no problem. 8x10's were difficult not because of lack of quality, but dust and scratches became too difficult to deal with.

Time to revive this thread again with another purchase I did today. 80-200mm f2.8 L, glass is pristine and is very sharp; no diffrence in IQ between my 70-200m f2.8 and this one; barrel has some use but everything is working fine and look intact; Cost $75!

Was there a better deal than the Canon triple rebates?
Actually, I picked up a Hartblei super rotator several years ago for $100... try and find one for that price now. That was one that you could truly call an investment because I cashed out.
Dont know is this sweet deal or not but love it so much !!!
