My profile shows one free update but v5 is a paid upgrade. I did not think about new camera support but it may be that we would be forced to upgrade.
The free upgrades we paid for years ago where for the major version upgrades. This is one of those. What they mean when they say it's a paid upgrade is that it isn't a free upgrade for everyone. You have to pay for it unless you still have a credit left for a paid major version upgrade.
If they don't honor the one upgrade that I have left then I'll be forced to shell out the $99 since I need 7d support.

I've always rated C1 significantly higher than ACR/Lr in terms of IQ - I mean miles ahead - and it looks like this trend continues.
That said, LR 3 is looking very good, and - at the moment anyway - Bibble 5 Preview is giving me the best conversions in terms of sharpness and detail that I've ever seen.
Decisions, decisions!
I still expect C1 to the best in high ISO noise terms though.
Must admit that I'm a bit puzzled by the upgrade pricing though - it looks like there's no upgrade path from Cap One 4 standard to Cap One 5 standard.
Wow Bibble 5 is not just another Duke Nukem and may actually appear!
Too bad C1 doesn't do localised adjustments like LR. I wish LR would add a ṃire tool like C1. Looks like by early 2010 we'll be spoilt for choice. I like LR since I have a quick workflow, and it's good to see they have improved detail, noise etc in LR 3.
See, there are many things I like about the C1 conversions (nicer color gradation, and it ekes out more detail than ACR/LR). However, I really DON'T like the noise processing...much preferring ACR, even though there's more noise remaining. I think the C1 noise reduction, while reducing it considerably, makes the files look digital to me...I'm just not a fan of the remaining noise look. ACR's remaining noise looks very film like to me, and it prints beautifully. LR2 does occasionally posterize subtle color gradation in highly saturated colors like greens, and for those cases, I'd use C1 for the conversion, but that only happens every once in a while...most of the time I really like the output from LR, and I happily await LR3. (I'm not going to use the beta much because I can't use my LR2 catalog, and I use the rating system a lot, and can't deal with losing tagged photos right now, as I'm putting together a hardcover book of my travel photography throughout Europe.
You have to convert to DNG to use 4.x with a 7d which was a real PIA for me. Too slow.
I spent all day with support trying to understand why my web page for license management says I have 2 free upgrades left yet Phase One says no, you used your upgrades already.

Still trying to pay for my 7d. Can't really afford another $99 right now although it looks like I'm going to have to find a way to afford it.

Joe, I bought and used Magne Nielsen's camera profiles for Canon 1Ds Mark II a few years back. Yes, the color rendition, especially for skin tone, was great but I didn't bother getting upgrades for newer cameras. I am not sure whether he is still actively doing this. Here is the link to his site although, it seems to be down right now as we speak: www.etcetera.cc.pub

Joshua, thanks for your input. I used Magne's profiles for RSP; and yes, they were terrific for that application!
Back some time ago quite a few C1 users swore up-and-down the "only" way to get a decent output file was to use Magne's profiles. I'm curious if the folks at C1 are now synthesizing profiles that work as well as those provided by Magne; that's why I asked David (OP) the question.

Typical CO confusion on the upgrades. I show 1 free upgrade available, but when I enter the licence key in the licencing screen for v5 it says no upgrades available.
