Name one camera like this that exists.

85 f1.2 on the Canon USA website is $2200. The 84 f1.8 is $480. If people can't see that there is a market for a $1200 85mm f1.4, then I give up.

The D700 is not a compact body (as in the size of a Rebel or smaller). The Canon version is something called the 5D Mark II. You may have heard of it.

Another option rather than Canon opting for an 85 f/1.4, is to offer say a new 100/105 f/1.8L IS. This would be a great alternative and I would happily buy the Sigma for 85mm and the Canon for 100mm. They should though as a matter of course, redo the 85L II properly this time.

Funny, I'd say the opposite.

The 85/1.2 doesn't make any compromises, that's why the AF is relatively slow.

You're actually asking for a compromise design, but without compromising IQ.

Not sure Dawei Ye would say that the 5DmkII has a Pro AF

Serious question,

Why would Canon produce two L lens with a 1/3 or less of the same focal length? It makes no business sense. Canon put lots of money into the 85mm 1.2, why would they go out and make a 85mm 1.4 L lens? Canon has no two prime L lens of the same focal length of less than 200mm. The L primes in this range are either 1.2 or 1.4. Not both. Canon would be cannibalizing their 85mm 1.2L II if they introduced a 85mm 1.4L.

If you want a special lens from Canon, go write to Santa Claus, because unless many people want it, Canon won't produce it. They are a private for profit business, not Santa Claus.

Problem solved? Maybe if you are an MF demon, otherwise you're just transferring from one 'problem' to another.

Yes, have the 5DII and I would not call it a pro class camera. Yes, it has a big sensor and good IQ, but that is all that is pro about it. It's focus is very much lacking as well as it's weather sealing ( had mine start doing all sorts of weird things this past weekend when taking photos of waterfalls. It got spray on it and did not function properly until I dried it off in the hotel room ). Focus and weather sealing are two attributes that go into a professional camera IMHO.

At WPPI I put the Sigma 85 F1.4 on a 5D and played with it....it was really nice. AF was faster than Canon's f1.2, but not as fast as the Canon f1.8, and bokeh was SMOOOOOOTH in the background. Very nice.
Sigma still wouldn't talk release date or pricing though...

The Sigma is going to be very tempting. After using the 85 f1.2, it just doesn't interest me.

The Sigma, if it's like their 50 f1.4, will be match nicely with my Canon 135mm. We'll see. (If I haven't moved to a Pentax 645 by then). Gee I love good options.

Lucky you didn't design the 135L then. It has the IQ and blazing AF speed, and a a normal mechanical focus, and can focus closer and is lighter. No compromises. Not sure how you see a superior design as a compromise.

cough f/2 isn't f/1.2...

Since both 85 and 135L are amongst my favorites I won't press my pov, the sun is shining outside and catching a couple of rays beats jerking around on FM.

+1 to both of the above, but I'd 'settle' for the latter.
