there SHOULD BE alot of things . dont mean they'll ever come.
If you look at the recent lens releases they have either been Hyper expensive L's or a bunch of EFs consumer zooms. Correct me if I'm wrong but the last consumer grade (non L) EF lens released was the 70-300 IS. Maybe with the Pixel jumps now Canon are basicly saying you'll have to pay for the best quality new releases or stick with the old stuff.
The reason that there are so many 50s is probably historical. As the typical kit lens and as a commonly used walk around/normal lens for years pretty much every manufacturer diversified their line of 50s. Nikon has an f/1.2, f/1.4 & f/1.8 50, so does Pentax, so does Olympus, so does Zeiss, etc. Nobody has f/1.2, f/1.4, & f/1.8 85s. I think it is unlikely that Canon will do so now.

Ok, so who would buy the 1.2 if they made a 1.4 like that? Or the other way around, if Nikon made a 1.2 instead, would anyone want a 1.4?
People buy the 50mm F/1.4 over the 50mm F/1.2L or 50mm F/1.8. It's probably due to cost. If an 85 F/1.4 were made and it were significantly less expensive than the 85 f/1.2 (which probably wouldn't be too hard), there would be a market for it.

The negativety surrounding these lenses and other Canon stuff is mostly internet B.S.! Yes, there may be a few problems out there but, overall most of the complaints and problems you read about are blown way out of proportion. Then the flames are fanned by a large population of people who read it some where and know it's the truth. Ok, sorry about the rant. By the way, one lens I would never sell is my 50 1.0L, it's easily my favorite.
I get this impression too. I'll read a review on any of the Canon 50mm lenses and I will get wildly varying views on all 3 of them. Some say that they're super awesome and others say they're junk and wish for upgrades.

Yes, because the Canon EOS mount is able to accommodate an 85/1.2, that's why.
I'm not sure the rear element is preventing Nikon from making F/1.2 lenses. Bear in mind that an F-mount 55mm F/1.2 was made way back when, but no AF version is currently being made. Probably says more about Nikon not feeling like making the lens then about the inability to make it. Not to mention the aperture is typically in the middle of the lens.
All the cute comments aside I would actually like a L version 85/1.4 with good AF, smooth manual focus, reduced mass at a reasonable cost. The 85/1.2 L is great, we know that. It is also expensive, very bulky and the manual focus feel is not as good as many quality 85's out there.
Why care about manual focus? Well, some need it. A lot of folks who shoot video with the 5DII find that the focus action with some of the L lenses is very frustrating...
Also, I think a 85/1.4 would be a great idea if it had IQ closer to the 85L and performance and weight closer to the 85/1.8... cost in about the middle. The 85L is damned expensive and damned heavy.

For the record...Canon HAD a 50/1.0 and replaced it with the 50/1.2. Also the 50/2.5 is a true macro lens so it shouldn't be considered along side the other 50mm lenses.

Pick up a Nikkor AIS 85 f/1.4 then... And one of those adapters... Actually the AFD version is better, but you're not going to get AF on a Canon anyway so what's the point.
You can say what you want about Canon, but just because there are only two lenses in that FFL, doesn't suggest they are missing something. The 85 FL by Canon is one of the most highly regarded FL lens choices for photographers.
The 85 FL in Canon's lineup is the last place I would probably look for a new lens.
I'd expect these lenses to be upgraded first before I saw another 85 introduced........35/2, 50/1.4 (motor is week), 135/2.8. Then maybe they could think about some 20/24 primes that shoot at 1.8 or 2.
Anyway, I'm sidetracking myself here, but why in the world would Canon make an 85/1.4?
