I have to agree; this is getting ridiculous. I've been waiting for Canon to make a 25mm f/1.3 for years now. Why won't they do it? Everyone wants one..
And what about that 19mm f/1.6 we've all been demanding for the last 20 years?
And don't even get me started on the missing 31mm f/1.4, 57mm f/1.9, and 73mm f/1.5, or the 223mm f/4. I mean, what's up with that Canon?

there SHOULD BE alot of things . dont mean they'll ever come.
If you look at the recent lens releases they have either been Hyper expensive L's or a bunch of EFs consumer zooms. Correct me if I'm wrong but the last consumer grade (non L) EF lens released was the 70-300 IS. Maybe with the Pixel jumps now Canon are basicly saying you'll have to pay for the best quality new releases or stick with the old stuff.
...or buy 3rd party. Seems like Sigma is taking notice and is producing some fine lenses lately.
Focus speed and price have kept me away from Canon's 85 f/1.2L. I'm hoping that the Sigma 85 f/1.4 coming out soon is priced somewhere in between Canon's f/1.2L and f/1.8, and delivers the same IQ as their (Sigma's) 50 f/1.4. So if Canon did make a reasonably priced 85 f/1.4L, I would imaging their 85 f/1.2 sales would suffer. So like others have stated, it doesn't make sense for them to wedge a lens in between their two excellent 85mm choices.
I would like a fast focusing L-quality 85/1.4 that wasn't a large or costly as the 85L. The 85/1.8 is a nice enough lens, but certainly not approaching L-quality IMO (the 100/2 is closer).

I think because we already have an f/1.8 and an f/1.2.
And if you really want f/1.4 you can get the Zeiss with the Canon mount... I think the 85mm focal length is pretty well covered
No. The Zeiss doe not have floating rear element and is not very good near mfd at all and is not that sharp wide open. It's optimised for shooting well away from mfd where when stopped down to f/2.8 or smaller is super sharp. For this reason I was ready to grab the superb Nikon 85 f/1.4 until the Sigma was announced.
I'd like to see a totally redesigned 85 f/1.2L from Canon however. The current 85L only has IQ going for it, it's AF is slow and it's manual focus fly-by-wire system is crap. For the price of this lens there should not be any silly compromises. It should be an 85mm version of the 50 f/1.2L The 85L II was a piss poor update considering how much they increased the price.

If there is room for a 50 1.4 between a 1.8 and a 1.2, there is room for an 85 1.4 between the 1.8 and the 1.2.
Not going to happen though; I wonder how much ofCanon's R&D is spent on zooms vs primes these days...
Sure there is room, but it will cut into the f/1.2 market.
A Canon 85/1.4 with the built and performance we want must be better then the 85/1.8 and with fast AF. So we'd basically want a 85/1.4 version of the 135/2, with wide open quality to match.
Such a lens will be bigger than the 85/1.8 and far more expensive, I'd guess between $1000-1500,- to achieve the performance goals. This will place it is a similar segment to the 85/1.2 although orientated for a different specialism (or a superior all rounder for that matter). So IMHO if the 85/1.4 people would like to see would by definition be an expensive lens, probably an L lens.
But then people will argue that the 1.8 is nearly as good at just a third or the price or even less.
Other people will look at cheap "alternatives" like the MF Samyang 85/1.4 and expect similar performance from the Canon (sometimes forgetting that the Samyang is MF and thus not fully comparable, but that aside).
Of course Canon can compromise, but that will only lower its price not improve its position in terms of IQ versus the f/1.8 lens, or Samyang.
Yes they can do it, but for Canon it simply doesn't make any business sense.
IMHO if they could improve the f/1.8 a little, if they can suppress the purple fringing in a mk.2 and up the contrast a little it I'd take it over any f/1.4 lens, especially MF ones.
The current 50/1.4 is a fluke in the sense that it is a relatively cheap product (to produce) with a lot of "cheap" plastic and a basic design. It doesn't fit in the current design philosophy of Canon nor the demands / expectations of the customer.
If anything Canon should indeed produce a followup to the 50/1.4 more in line with the 28/1.8 and 85/1.8 and 100/2 with improved wide open performance, corner to corner sharpness. Such a lens will be much more expensive though and again that might not make any business sense while they keep selling the "cheap" lens.
Plus any new Canon 50/1.4 needs to be better than the Sigma and still relatively close in price (not more than 125% anyway).

Yep my answer was in october. Now we have the siggy 1.4 announced.Thats good (hope they can pull it off)
BUT remember they have designed the lens to fit more than 1 system. so 1.4 makes more sense . If they were to design around just Canon then I guess they could have gone for the extra fast route. (a 1.2 that could undercut the L would sell well)
If Sigma can pull off a great lens at a good price then they will sell a fair few
