"Global warming" used to justify your negativism?
Like I wrote earlier, I suggest you spend YOUR time contributing something positive, rather than negative on this forum.
Another "Welcome" to some lurkers from around the world. Some from places I have never heard about before. Glad to see you visiting!
Now let's see you post some photos or comments.
Here's a suggestion: Post some photos (with people in them) from YOUR part of the world here and tell us a little about your area or town or village such as why it has that name or what it means.

Here's a suggestion for a post from you: Post some photos (with people in them) from YOUR part of the world here and tell us a little about your area or town or village such as why it has that name or what it means. Or show us some of the character or characters you see in your area. Post a "Street" photo showing people in your streets or market or parks.

Here are a few of the more unusual locations I noticed. Tell us about them in photos of people!
Buffalo Grove
Powder Springs (What an unusual name! I usually think of "powder" as dry.)

I can't believe you don't have your own forum somewhere, where newbs can flock and learn.
You bump "your" thread with City names...?
Really?
Knock yourself out...
Pfiltz,
I posted this thread with a sincere interest in helping others feel welcome here and to encourage Newbies and Lurkers to post photos or comments here in the forum.
You, on the other hand, continue to post in this forum and this thread mocking people and their contributions to this forum.
I don't think your mocking or sarcasm does any good for this forum community.
Since you don't like this thread, why don't you skip it from now on?
Then spend that time adding something positive to this forum.
The city names I have recently posted are from people who are visiting and lurking and writing to me and who may have not yet posted anything yet.
This is my way of welcoming them to this forum and encouraging them to post something from their part of the world. It is a friendly gesture.
I have a sincere interest in seeing what they see in their place on the planet. Whether that is weather (with people) or places (with people) or things (with people).
I hope that makes it clear to everyone why I have posted these city names.
There are many more, but those cities I posted have some unusual names or names I have never seen and I think it might interest others to learn or see something from places we may not have heard about before.
This thread IS long.
That is because it is not a sticky. It is a sliding sticky...it slides down the forum pages with time. When I see it get on the second page, I bump it to the first page for the new visitors to this forum to see. Of course I am not alone in doing that. Several others have bumped it too.
A real "sticky" would be permanently posted at the top of the first page of the forum. I don't think that is necessary, so I don't try to keep this on the top of the forum (that is not my intent). I merely try to keep it visible on the first page where new visitors will see it as it is intended to help them and encourage them to post in this forum.
I noticed today that this thread has had 20,000 views!
That means that there are MANY Newbies and Lurkers out there who are not posting yet. So, I consider this thread to be a good thing to have on the forum so it will encourage "some" to move from Lurking to posting.
I know it is working in that respect, because I continue to get private messages from folks who are going to post here and I HAVE noticed those that have posted too. I think that is a good thing. This forum needs more contributions of photos and comments!
Someone asked if I had my own forum. I do not. I have no plans to create one and do not have any desire to have one. I prefer to spend my free time helping others here, looking at photos (which I enjoy) and writing.
Steady seems to be doing most of the bumping lately.
Trying to drive traffic to your site Steady??
Perhaps you missed it when I wrote it several times above including in the original post.
This thread is intended to help Newbies and Lurkers feel welcome and to give them some tips on how to have a better experience on a forum like this.
It is all clearly explained in the original post.
The primary goal of this thread is to create a friendlier atmosphere here and to help newbies feel more welcome and help them with tips on how to post here.
Obviously, some people do not agree with that or my POV.
I suggest those that don't agree with my approach to helping this forum should try their own way to help others or to bring more people to posting on the forum.
I am seeing positive results for this forum as newbies and lurkers tell me this thread has helped them and the linked tips have helped them too.
Driving Traffic?
I am trying to encourage others to post and participate HERE on FM People Forum.
___________
Part of what gave me the idea to write this and start this were the negative attitudes I have seen in THIS forum over the last two years. I think THIS forum has too much:
sniping
backbiting
sarcastic remarks
"snarkiness"
rude comments
mocking
harsh criticisms of beginners
ridicule of simple mistakes
It is those unnecessary negative comments and attitudes and the atmosphere they create that keep many people from posting here on this forum.
How do I know?
I know because that is what the Lurkers and Newbies have been telling me in many of the Private Messages I have received.
I hope we can make this a better place with a nicer atmosphere.
Let me see.....if you criticize, that's positive....but...if we disagree, that's a negative. So your opinion is a positive....but, our opinion is a negative.
I'm POSITIVE that the world would beat a path to your door just from your infinite wisdom. One would think that you would have an endless stream of visitors to your site just by word of mouth. You shouldn't need to keep bumping this thread.

Well let's see....you think your comment above is a "positive" contribution?
I don't think I have infinite wisdom. I would never claim that at all. (that is a laugh)
In fact, a big part of this thread is letting visitors to this site know that they don't have to be experts in photography to participate and have fun here.
But I do think there is a difference between us, Ryder.
I come here to try to help others. This thread is intended to help others.
What are your comments in this thread intended to do?
You are welcome to disagree with my approach. But I don't think you add anything positive or constructive or helpful to this thread by your comments above.
They just seem like petty criticisms to me, as is usual with your remarks, as I have seen in my earlier threads, where you posted similarly.
And your remarks seem to want to redirect the intent or direction of this thread. That would be a distortion of the truth. Why do that?
I am trying to keep this thread "On Topic" and that topic is about helping Newbies and Lurkers. So, if you have nothing positive to add to that, then simply skip this thread.
I also suggest you read my Original Post. It is easy for anyone to understand the intent as it is clearly spelled out in detail.
While YOU may not get it, many others have. So, if it is not something you understand, then maybe you should read it again.
_______________
Here's a positive suggestion for you: Why don't you start your own thread where you can do what YOU can to encourage more people to join this forum and participate?
THAT would be something different from your usual negative posts in my threads.
Try it some time.
_____________
One of the things I suggest for ANYONE and EVERYONE here is that we try to live by the Golden Rule as a community. That simply means: Treat others as you would want to be treated.
____________
For the Newbies and Lurkers:
There are a few people on this forum who do have a negative attitude and prefer to snipe at people rather than post photos or post positive threads or post constructive comments in threads. . It is one of the unfortunate facts about this forum. I hope you can overlook these people as much as I try to. They are a minority here and while they are consistent and persistent and pesky, they are not the majority. From what I have seen over the last couple of years, they do very little but criticize others whenever they get a chance to do that. I am sure you know people like that are in every group as large as this forum. So, don't be inhibited from posting here.
For the other forum members:
I encourage you all to post what you can in a positive fashion here on this forum. That will make this place better and may attract more Lurkers and Newbies to participate.
It is unfortunate that a thread that is truly intended to project a positive impression of welcome and good will and help to visitors, Newbies and Lurkers attracts so many negative people and their criticisms too.
I'm with Steady, I believe that this thread can help this forum a place where newbies and lurkers will learn and participate, so don't miss the chance.
Steady is only the one who has the spirit to help other photographers here to learn and have fun with your photography. (Since I started posted here)
Maybe you should consider that there are many types in this world, with different views, different ways of making a point, different styles of communication, etc... and although they may not line up perfectly in the Steady world of thinking, it doesn't necessarily make it bad.
I had a really, really good and very successful senior photographer tell me once, when I asked him how can I make a really tact sharp image, because I "thought" that was important, say to me, "Any dummy can take a tact sharp image, but why on earth would you want to?"
That's all he said to me in response to that question. Even though brief and to the point, it made me think to myself, why "I thought" I needed that attribute in an image.
He didn't include any smiley faces, with love and kisses, and sing kumbaya, but made me think with a simple and direct statement.
And while you've appointed yourself in your mind, "the keeper of the forum" and "self proclaimed mentor of newbies", your not the only person that gets PM's, Emails, Phone Calls about photography. I've never turned down a request from anyone who ask me a question about photography.
What I find just totally bizarre, is that you think you know what's best for everyone involved. I mean really? Where does that come from?
Just because your on a forum 24x7 doesn't impress me in the least. It might for someone who doesn't know better, but it's a very telling sign, matter of fact.
Of course, this is just my "POV" on things.
I won't be able to hang around on the forum all day. I have work to do, and then some fun stuff later this afternoon.
Like I said before, you are trying to force a sticky down our throats. If the powers at be decide to make your Godly post a sticky, I'm fine with that. But constantly bumping it is nothing short of arrogant and irritating.
