What!!!!

yup, that was my first reaction.

What the hell are they thinking, we allready got the 105mm macro, its afs and vr and faster. I dont see the need for this new lens at all.

This is irritating me, nikon has disappointed me for quite some time now. We need updates on primes from 20mm to 35mm and on some tele. I know the profit on DX market is better, but seems like they forget to "please" the FX and pro market.

You forget that the "FX and pro market" are already pleased. Professional photographers do not sit and mull over lens ratings for hours on end. They know what works, they know what they want, and they do not sit and complain when camera companies choose to release a consumer lens.

By releasing this lens, Nikon is just confirming that they are not going to forgo DX cameras in order to focus on FX cameras. Admittedly the f3.5 does raise a few question marks, but you need to understand that the 105mm actually stops down when shooting 1:1, and the 60mm lens has a working distance of only 1cm when you shoot 1:1 with the hood on, making ambient light almost useless. By increasing the focal length and adding VR while stopping down the lens, Nikon is putting out a solid lens for use on their smaller SLR bodies.

The price is a little questionable, but Canon currently does not offer anything comparable, so why complain?

First of all, true pros dont use forums as much as we do. But you are wrong when you think pros with for instance nikon are satisfied, with whatever nikon launches. They complain about cameras and lenses just as we do. They just dont write it all over a forum like this.

but Canon currently does not offer anything comparable, so why complain?

i dont really care about what canon does or doesnt, it would be just as wrong if i said canon have a 24mm 1.4 and nikon doesnt and therefore i am entitled to complain.

Well, as someone dipping a toe into Nikon-land after a couple of decades with Canon, the lack of fast wide angle primes sure does matter to me. 60mm micro, 105mm micro VR, why in blazes waste development time and resources on an 85 micro VR when the fast wide angle prime range isn't just weak, but completely missing?

Where is the 24/1.4, or a 28/1.4, for low light indoor work when the 24-70 and 14-24 are too heavy and not fast enough?

I suspect a lot of us are thinking the same. I am. So that makes 2 people already.

This is a surprising lens, not so much because of the focal length, but because of the slow aperture. Two stops slower than an 85mm f/1.8 more or less negates the advantage of VR, which means that this is more or less an all-out macro lens. For most other things, the f/1.8 lens looks like the better choice.

I agree that fast WA primes are missed, but so are fast, image stabilised primes shorter than 200mm. At the moment, there are none.

Am I the only one who thinks this makes sense?
Just take a look at how well the Tamorn 90/2.8 and Tokina 100/2.8 are selling.
The Nikon 60 is too short and the 105 is too expensive for a lot of people. Those with a body without focus motor have been stuck with either the short 60 or the Tamron.
I'm guessing Nikon wants a piece of that cake now. The difference between f/3.5 and f/2.8 isn't all that interesting in a macro lense. My Tamron goes to f/3.5 on pretty much everything shorter than infinity anyway.
Had it been IF too then I might have sold my Tamron to get the new Nikon.

I dont think it makes sense at all, first of all, the tamron, sigma and tokina are all over the used market now, and at cheap prices. Had they launched this sooner, then i think it would have made more sense.
The 60 and 105mm are both fairly new designs, the 85mm is just gonna steal sales from mostly 60mm.

Secondly, the market for a fast FX prime is much larger, and therefore more profitable for Nikon.

If you have a body with no built in AF motor then you are limited to Either Nikon's lineup where the 105 is too expensive for a lot of people and the 60 is a bit too short or the Tamron lineup with a 90 and a 60 for the same price or expensive Sigmas.
Now you can get a Nikon with proper AF-S and VR for the same price as a Tamron.
There are not many used Tamrons with the motor out there since it was recently released.
This will be the macro to get for D40, D60 and D3000. I hang around a bunch of forums in Sweden with mostly amateurs with those cameras and the second lense they buy is either a tele zoom or a macro. Nikon had no macros for this segment up until now and I think Tamron will see a cut in sales now.
As long as the Nikon is sharp that is.

Man, I definitely don't do that!

My manual focus AI'd 55mm Micro and AIS 105mm Micro work quite well, so I'm not very enthusiastic about the new 85 DX either...

I'm happy with the release of this lens and will wait to see how it performs. But if nikon releases (or is working on) a 18mm f2 DX and 24mm f1.8 DX, I'd be even happier!

As an all out macro lens, it makes sense, but most amateurs buy their macro lenses as multipurpose macro/portrait/short tele, and that is where this lens falls short. It's simply not a very interesting lens for other applications than macro.

It weighs 12.5 ounces. That makes it very appealing as part of a compact hiking/travel kit.

The f/3.5 aperture isn't that far off from f/2.8, where the third party 90-ish macros are already. It's a long way from the 85/1.8, of course (I'd have expected something more like a non-macro 85/2 VR as a successor to that lens). Still this is interesting, in its own small way.

Great release.

The Tamron 90mm STILL sells plenty.I will sell a Tamron 90mm macro, probably once a fortnight.

Now there is a real viable option. The price is always a concern with Nikon, but it has VR, and the 90mm Tammy doesn't.

I don't think the difference between f/2.8 and f/3,5 is big enough to be a problem.

Really? There are probably more D40X cameras out there than every D700, D3 and D3X combined. And I'm not even counting the D200/300 line.

The slow aperture is a bit limiting, but if you are a DX user and want macro, this is it. If the price is in Tamron 90 money. Which it might as well be, given the pricing of the 35/1.8. And if it as good as the 35/1.8...hmmmm yummy yummy.
