It's been many years since I have been to Times Square. I remember the days
when this place was full of smut. But now... it's such a tourist attraction with big
name stores and billboards everywhere. Some of the biggest billboards you will
ever see and truly incredible and creative displays.
These were shot just before I went down 44th Street on the same night when I
saw Matt Damon and Jude Law.
I noticed MANY photographers out there. Both amateur as well as professionals
who were there for street photography since no there seems to mind having
their picture taken.
Below you'll see 2 Canon users I saw. One with a 5D mk2 PROPPED on the
floor with a cigarette box... who was shooting a dance routine.
The other was being told to leave, by a public safety officer, because he was not
allowed to use a tripod on NYC streets without a permit.
My shots.... all hand-held taken with Nikon D3. This was 10pm at night.

Because it's sooo unsafe, it's all B.S.
doesn't look like you needed a tripod, that sure is a busy place.
thanks for sharing.
That's actually not true. You are allowed to use a tripod without a permit. You're just not allowed to use lights without one. NYC cops tend to confuse this.
RacShade, you're correct. However, many NYC cops do not know this and it might be a good idea to make a copy of this just in case. However, at one time, tripods were not allowed. I think cops still think it is in effect.
However, in this case, he was obstructing, technically a staircase. So the public safety officer could ask him to leave or close up the tripod. Now if he was on the edge of the sidewalk, that'll be another thing.

Cool work. I can't get over not being able to use a Tri-Pod in Times Square. Who stays up at night coming up with these silly rules??
Thanks Wilfredo!! actually you CAN use a tripod, but at the time, he was obstructing a staircase, so that's not allowed. If he was on the edge of a sidewalk, that would be fine.
I guess i live in nyc, so i'm not as excited about time square..lolz But nonetheless, those are some great shots! Love the theater shots! Gave me a impression of how it might look like in the old days when theater was big!
