Your question may be regarded as flame bait.
In any case, wait until next fall in 2010, surely there will be.
flame bait, why? I used to shoot Canon and I now shoot Nikon but still appreciate quite a few features of Canon. I just want competition. Fall 2010? by that time Canon will talk next generation!

I do believe nugeny, that you would be well-served by jumping ship to Canon. Buy the 7D. Unload your Nikon gear. Do it man, you know you want to....
What kind of question is this? Are you looking for us to say something reassuring? Those of us who know the future are sworn to keep quiet (NDA)
Are you looking for a treatise about values and the definition of "better" and "best" and perhaps "silly"?
Nice pictures on your site btw ... why would you care for some improvement in equipment? What is lacking do you feel, in you images that equipment might fix?

If I remember it was the spec for 1DsII, a $8000 cam.
They do, its the D300s. The 7d is a response to the D300/s, adding features that existed in the D300 a couple of years ago and adding video and upping the pixel count.
Canon introduced the 7D as a direct competitor to the D300(s).
The 7D is actually quite unique for Canon in a sense that it is positioned between the xxD and 1D series. Up til now Canon's marketing strategy was dictated by a strict segmentation of the consumer and professional markets. Canon users should thank Nikon for challenging Canon to let go of this stupid arrogant segmented strategy. The D300(s) made room for the 7D
But unfortunately Canon is still playing a catch up game. Many of the "new" (as in new for Canon users) features have been implemented in Nikon DSLR's for some years now.
Still, as a Canon user I welcome the 7D. Because Canon showed that they are willing to let go of their sinful ways (under pressure of course). Plus it seems to have nice IQ for a 18MP crop cam too
I still have yet to see anything that shows this new Canon autofocus system can match that of the D300. I thought the 50D was supposed to have some great autofocus with a bunch of sweet cross type sensors but I still don't see it on the sidelines taking photos.
So far I've only seen RG test it and comment on it, and we all know how well that went for the new 7D.

Uhm, that's because it's not available yet? But by specs alone this new AF is better than the D300 already, because it has more cross type AF sensors.
The AF of the 40D and 50D are both faster/more accurate than the D300 though in real use. And the 7D is cleaner at high ISO's than any crop cameras from Nikon, or any other brand.
I've yet to see anybody D300 on the sidelines taking photos either.
To answer the OP, the D300s is the closest rival to the 7D, but it lags in several areas, such as resolution, cross type AF points, FPS, Liveview, and relatively low res movie mode.

Good ol' Drisley! Where've you been man? Still trolling the Nikon forums. You make it an art man. Kudos!!!

My D2H has 9 cross type sensors just like the 40D and 50D. Are you saying that the 40D and 50D can autofocus as well as my D2H?

Nope, Nikon has once again fallen to Canon -- maybe for the final time. Honestly it was hard to even go to work the morning after the 7D was announced. I was sitting on the subway looking shamefully at strangers' faces, all the while I knew deep inside me that at home I had the shame of the photography world... a Nikon.
As I walked through midtown Manhattan and saw all the tourists with D40's and D80's I wanted to scream out loud and rip my clothes to shreds. My GOD, they were using obsolete cameras! Why did they even bother coming to the Big Apple, for goodness sake their photos will be worthless. It took unholy strength to keep to smacking their cameras out of their hands for their viewfinders had *less* than 100% coverage!
I'm glad I don't have children yet. After all, how could a responsible human being have progeny knowing that in this world we have to face the disgusting embarrassment that is the Nikon lineup? It's truly indefensible. I lose memory cards after every day I take pictures because I stare at the results in dismay and then fling the card against a brick wall -- the very same brick wall that all Canon bodies can perfectly photograph.
How could you Nikon? Such utter failure. I swear monkeys are working at that company. If they don't respond to the Canon 7D then frankly IT'S ALL OVER. I really can't take it anymore. I'm going to charge up my Canon SD700 and use that from now on. Canon, why must you be so awesome?? There is nothing more than can be said.

While asked politely, posting this question in a new thread with this title on the nikon board is rather trollish. There is already a long thread on the 7D and your question should have been asked there.
This is the NIKON forum, not the Canon forum. Questions regarding the Canon 7D belong on the Canon board.

Also remember the 1DsII was announced at the end of 2005, it's now 4 years later. It has 49 autofocus points is built like brick #$%@ house, many of them are still in professional service. The march of technology is something. I'd still take a 1DsII over a 7D if I were shooting Canon.
