as a canon shooter, I have to say, "Thank God for Nikon". Were it not for Nikon finally becoming a serious player in the DSLR arena, we'd never have the 7D.
I think it's mainly because of Nikon, that Canon is begining to listen to us, and is giving us what WE want, instead of giving us what THEY want us to have.
My next hope is for a 3D......FF, rast frame rate, maybe 8fps,16meg, compact body.....dreaming, yeah, but now, with Nikon's help...........maybe the dream's a little closer to reality
Sorry, but I am not understanding the excitement, unless it is an excitable frustration of sorts. The tests available on the 7D show ISO 1600 full of noise, and forget ISO 3200. And, there are focusing issues that prevent the camera from using what is advertised. And, the magic IS system is not on the body as many think, but integral to the lens, and only the 100mm macro that is not availabel yet.
But there is more, Canon provided the testers with beta camera units containing software and hardware that will not be in production because it is not good enough. So, the tests were completed with faulty equipment.
The Nikon D300 was not raped to create the 7D, it still retains its 3D focusing, 1005 RGB exposure, and other features, even tho many others were cloned. Although the unit that may have been dissected for designs and asolutions has been garbaged its family remains.
Nikon not only set the pace but virtually guarantees that their pro cameras can bring the shot home.
That is big time.
Sorry for this Canon minute, but Nikons seem to be getting Canon envy for no sane reason I can see.
The 1DSMk I and II series is a bit dated don't you know? And the MK III series is only used with twinkle toes and holding ones breath that the system will work when the shot counts.
If Nikon lowered the price of the D3 with mass consumption in mind then the world would change.

What kind of question is this? Are you looking for us to say something reassuring? Those of us who know the future are sworn to keep quiet (NDA)
Are you looking for a treatise about values and the definition of "better" and "best" and perhaps "silly"?
Nice pictures on your site btw ... why would you care for some improvement in equipment? What is lacking do you feel, in you images that equipment might fix?

Canon introduced the 7D as a direct competitor to the D300(s).
The 7D is actually quite unique for Canon in a sense that it is positioned between the xxD and 1D series. Up til now Canon's marketing strategy was dictated by a strict segmentation of the consumer and professional markets. Canon users should thank Nikon for challenging Canon to let go of this stupid arrogant segmented strategy. The D300(s) made room for the 7D
Right on. But too little and much too late for many of us.

Nope, Nikon has once again fallen to Canon -- maybe for the final time. Honestly it was hard to even go to work the morning after the 7D was announced. I was sitting on the subway looking shamefully at strangers' faces, all the while I knew deep inside me that at home I had the shame of the photography world... a Nikon.
As I walked through midtown Manhattan and saw all the tourists with D40's and D80's I wanted to scream out loud and rip my clothes to shreds. My GOD, they were using obsolete cameras! Why did they even bother coming to the Big Apple, for goodness sake their photos will be worthless. It took unholy strength to keep to smacking their cameras out of their hands for their viewfinders had *less* than 100% coverage!
I'm glad I don't have children yet. After all, how could a responsible human being have progeny knowing that in this world we have to face the disgusting embarrassment that is the Nikon lineup? It's truly indefensible. I lose memory cards after every day I take pictures because I stare at the results in dismay and then fling the card against a brick wall -- the very same brick wall that all Canon bodies can perfectly photograph.
How could you Nikon? Such utter failure. I swear monkeys are working at that company. If they don't respond to the Canon 7D then frankly IT'S ALL OVER. I really can't take it anymore. I'm going to charge up my Canon SD700 and use that from now on. Canon, why must you be so awesome?? There is nothing more than can be said....Show more →
you pushed me over the edge. I am going Sony.

I do believe nugeny, that you would be well-served by jumping ship to Canon. Buy the 7D. Unload your Nikon gear. Do it man, you know you want to....
Ha Ha Ha D3 will keep me in Nikon camp for 4 more years. I will see what is available at that time. But I may be to old to switch again.
I willl probably buy a Nikon D7 with 70 MP on board. ha ha ha

Also remember the 1DsII was announced at the end of 2005, it's now 4 years later. It has 49 autofocus points is built like brick #$%@ house, many of them are still in professional service. The march of technology is something. I'd still take a 1DsII over a 7D if I were shooting Canon.
Small correction. the 1Ds2 was released in Sept 2004 and it IS still a great camera. If Canon would introduce an updated version of it today, it would sell lots.
Let's wait and see the tests before we wonder if Nikon has a match. (Also a former Canon shooter, actually I'm a bi-shooter now with a D700 for the AF).

Does Nikon have any thing to compete with 18MP, 8fps, sealed and $1800.00?
If I remember it was the spec for 1DsII, a $8000 cam.
If 18mp is a requirement, I guess Nikon doesn't have anything as of now. Kinda like how Canon had nothing to compete with the D300 for over 2 full years.
If one doesn't need 18mp, I would take a D300s over the 7D even if the 7D was $500 cheaper. If I were still a Canon shooter, yes, I would be excited about the 7D. As a Nikon shooter, I just wouldn't give up Nikon AF, dependable Nikon metering, iTTL, etc for 6mp more resolution.
