"When longer exposure times requiring an extremely steady camera stance are essential, a slight pressure on the shutter release button in ‘soft release’ mode is sufficient."
I want this so bad ...

we might have different approaches to look at that
I think that it's not great but not terrible either. I would even go further and say it is film-like...... and still retains a good amount of detail and sharpness.
..........but is it worth 6999? .............. NO.................
fotoz, your image doesn't display, but I've seen the 'rayban' image of it...
Ah well... would have been interesting if they had managed to keep that one secret.
For some reason $6995 does not strike me as completely ridiculous for an 18mp FF Leica, it must be the D3x's and 1DsMkIII's of the world skewing my view of reality.
I'm curious to see more of those ISO 1600 samples, color noise yes, but not horrible. Probably better than the 1DsmkII at that speed eh? Here's to us all being well off and wanting a compact travel camera
Leica being Leica again...I guess.
The M9 would be an attractive alternative if it was selling for $2995 or even as high as $3500. But at $6995, one wonders if Leica has it scheduled on when they plan to shut factory doors once and for all.
The X1 appears to be similar to the Leica CM from the film age. But at $1995 - they must be joking. I would have considered the X1 for sure if it was closer to $800-$900. In fact, I would get it over the Panasonic GF-1. But at this price, it would just be silly to buy a fixed lens camera - even if it has that pretty red dot on it.

I completely agree with you................even Apple does not charge this much premium for looks and build quality............ Leica might be far ahead in terms of body and optics, but they are still way behind in terms of features and functionality.
why are folks so amazed at the price? It's Leica and apparently they can charge what they want. If the current trend continues we'll be paying $9K for the M10 (M7=$3K; M8= $5K, M9=$7K, M10=$9K) Apparently no-one told Leica that technology is supposed to get cheaper as it matures, not more expensive.
The X-1 pricing seem the most odd IMO... I could swallow it if the lens was interchangeable, but for a fixed lens the $2K price tag seems a tad high, especially when you consider the optional viewfinder will probably be another $500.

Well, there is reason behind that. With a 18MP chip they are closer to the current top of the line than they were with the M8. Then, I saw a lot of M8 offers from shops, and they still want those to go away at about 3-4K, hence the price tag.
