I BELIEVE I HAVE AN ANSWER (kinda long but chill, it is worth a read). I picked up an EOS 1-v from a sports shooter a while back and he showed me a similar burn on a body that he had started to tear apart (1dMIII). After much speculation and a trip to CPS, the question was asked if his cameras were ever set down in direct sunlight for any period of time over 30 seconds. His answer was, "of course, I carry 3 bodies to cover sports and usually two are on the ground or a laying on a bag near me." The techs said that the camera/lens being in the same position to the sun for quite some time led to the burns/melts. He said it can happen inside or outside, it just has to be the perfect storm of angle of sun and lens.
I'm not saying that shooting into the sun is not the culprit here and I'm definitely not saying that I won't be shooting into the sun anymore. What I am saying is that anytime I set a camera/lens down where there is sunlight, I make sure to cover up the lens with something (you know, like a lens cap!). So that's my story and I hope you enjoyed it. Happy 50L flare to all and keep up the awesome! ...Show more →

I should also mention that I noted to Canon to estimate a repair on my heavily sracthed LCD screen and torn rubber eyepiece. They are repairing both for FREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
I Love the Canon.
On a side note CPS, (Canon Prefererd Service) is freaking incredible. $100 a year and it paid for itself the first busted lens. I save 30% on all labor repairs. Saved $83 on my 24L and $63 on my 16-35L. That, AND the fact that I go to the front of the line when repair is needed. If I ship on a Monday, I get it back on Friday. Soooooo goood!!
Sam.... I agree, the limited experience that I've had with canon service has been great.. and CPS is awesome. I've already borrowed 3 lenses for FREE... the 24-70 f/2.8L, 24 f/1.4L, and soon the TS 45... although, we purchased a 24L after we used it.. so I'm sure they see it as a win as well.

got us there, I used to shoot Canon, loved the service department, however since I have gone NIkon........ actually, have not needed to send anything in cause nothing has broken on me..... hrm, must be the metal housing on my mirror that protects me from evil.

Sounds like Canon doesn't want to admit an official recall of some sorts.
From people I know in the auto industry, the only reason any recalls are made is this: if the recall is cheaper than the potential lawsuits (calculated total losses) then a manufacturer will issue a recall. If the recall, albeit very dangerous to potential drivers, is small enough that the potential damaging lawsuits is cheaper than the recall, they dont do.
So I guess Canon guesses that a recall would be more damaging than letting leak a potential design flaw to the masses, so they fix quietly for free.
Wasn't that in fight club?
Sorry, I don't think the sensor box burns are a recall issue, or an unknown...my dinosaur 5d1 has them from the previous owner.
