Well there it is. I pay nothing. I called them to talk to someone who could help me with why the damage took place and I got nowhere. Oh wells. Of to go shoot some flare. YAY!!
..is awesome but has it's price.
On about a week ago, I noticed my 5Dmk2 acting very weird. To get correct exposure I was compensating at -4 stops. WOW. Bad. Everything was over exposed. Did some investing and found these strange burns inside mirror and sensor area. Called Canon for repair and noted to them what I saw. They said it was likely due to shooting into the sun. SUCKS!!!
Basically, the lens becomes a very intense magnifying glass and even the smallest bit of exposure to such heat can permanently damage your sensor.
Just thought I'd throw it out here seeing that flare is something lots of us here incorporate in our work. Was at breakfast with Quan D, Jason Tran and Nick, (Nfoto) and was telling them the story. They were all confused as to were the burns were. I had Quan grab his camera to show them and QUAN HAD IT TOO.
Check your cameras boys and girls. The flare iz the cool but poison. Never trust a big butt and a smile.
Yep .. I've read of telephoto lenses totally smoking sensors. I'm guessing most of the flare shots are done with wider angle lenses but still damage can occur.
"Not covered" as in will Canon cover it? Or will I continue to shoot "not covered" as in no condoms? In any case, both. Somewhere in the fine print, I know Canon mentions not shooting into the sun. Were stuck.
Sam, haven't you being rocking da flare for years? Is this some sort of 5DII over-sensitive to the heat issue? Or have you just started doing it a LOT more often than when you had the MK I ?

If I was gonna guess which lens it was I'd say the 50 1.4 or 50L. I use those the most for flare. If you look at the shot thought. There are 4 different burns. From 4 different shots/poses? I dunno. Could be. Could be that these were all from separate days. Yes, I've been doing flare for about 2 years with ever body I've owned. (5D x2, 40D, 50D, Rebel, 5Dmk2 x 2). First time I've noticed an issue however.
