But the problem is this: I'm looking at the bride and I just got my shot and then I think there's about to be a nice video moment. On a 5D2 I hit the set button and that's it, I'm in business. On the 7D I have to flip a fiddly switch and then hit a less reachable and smaller button. It's a fumbler's nightmare. Then I have to remember to switch the switch back to the liveview position (and disable liveview?) to turn off video monitor and preserve battery power. It sucks at every turn, and it took an extra button and switch to make it worse. The solution is to allow the user to configure the 'set' button to start video recording, whatever else is going on....Show more →
Gotta say... I love the new button implementation for Live View/Video. FWIW.
I am really happy with it and its AF performance. I come from a 1DmkIIN
I again express concern about the 7D AF's ability as there appears no point of sharpness. I apologise sincerely if something was wrong with my monitor screen.

I think we are seeing the limit of the 100-400. There is going to be lots of gnashing of teeth about how the 7D isn't sharp, but the real reason for that will be that its sensor will outresolve a lot of lenses which used to look fine on more forgiving sensors. This camera needs better lenses than any previous DSLR simply because it has smaller sensels. It doesn't make your lenses/pictures worse, it just exposes where their limit is. The 7D can do a lot better than this crop of the fighter, I am sure. In fact, there is quite good detail in this image and it will benefit enormously from strongish sharpening. The detail is there if you look around the red warning marks and other detailed areas. Stick a 135 f2 on it and it will light up like an afterburner. This issue is worth considering though: the cost to get the best out of this camera may well lie in the requirement for top glass. Canon seems aware of this, judging by the new EF-S zooms. This is nothing new. Each generation of cameras, as sensel density increases, consigns yet another swathe of trusted old lenses to the scrapheap.

Does the 7D suffer from low ISO pattern noise too?
And reading your reviews, is it correct to assume that the 7D AI Servo has a tendency to lock on a target and not let it go?
The regular low ISO pattern noise seems to be nicely controlled, basically at any ISO it seems like one of the best canon bodies yet (I think some say the 1D3 was pretty decent, not quite sure how these two compare, perhaps the 7D is better still).
The ai servo thing is just speculation based on how it acted quite differently just pointing it at various object inside the house at night. It's possible that it might mean good things for sports shooting, but that is pretty speculative. If you try to quickly aim on some lower contrast part of another uniform and it won't switch that might be bad though. No idea how it will work on the field yet.
I might be getting some maze artifacts though on my particular copy, have to look into it more to see how bad it is (or not). Certainly not as bad as some of the bum copy 5D2 samples shown.

I agree with this in principle, except that I don't think the 100-400 is outresolved by the 7D, at least not my copy.
I tend to check various lenses with new bodies to see how they do, and here is the 100-400 on the 7D, 400mm at f/5.6, focus via Live View. (Apologies for the static subject matter, haven't had a chance to use this lens on the 7D for real yet, and at least it might be something that appeals to you, Richard ) I think the sharpness is perfectly acceptable for professional use.
Edit: Actually, in the detail of the jet above, if that really is a 100% crop in DPP with sharpening at 0, I think it looks perfectly fine. Add in any normal pre-sharpening step and I think it would crispen up nicely.

OK - but care to articulate why, and in particular how it is better than having a dedicated button for each function?
Guess I should say, I love it in comparison with the 5D2 that I have used for the past 11months. But sure...a dedicated button for each would be nice. I should state though that I shoot video with it when I intend on shooting video. I don't mix stills and video shooting very often at all.

Nice shot... what has your experience been with the 7D and your 400mm F5.6 prime lens?
I am sorry to point this out but the shot is not in focus,I am wondering if some focusing problems is due to mis-adjustment of Micro-focus
since I dont own a body that has this feature as yet,Am I right in concluding micro-focus adj..relies on the shooters own eyes? if so if your eyes are either bad or due to a dim viewfinder/dim subject would micro-focus be an issue that may make all your pics OOF.. ?

Looks like typical 100-400 performance to me.
Probably not... The EXIF says this was shot at f7.1 and 250-mm focal length. That is not a weak operating point for this lens. If there is a weak point, it is f5.6 @ 400-mm, but not f7.1 at 250-mm. That's not an extreme operating point for this lens.
I don't know guys...I have a 7D and the noise is making me sick at lower ISO's! I mean at 320 with my 50L set to 3.2, its so noisy! Any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing high levels of noise at LOW ISO's? I feel like I have taken a HUGE step back and plan to use my 5D this weekend at an e-session if I can't figure this out.

Since everyone else is going to ask too, can you post examples?

A couple of issues in play here. The 100-400 - some copies are sharper than others. Mine really needs to be stopped down to f/7.1 to do great, and that's on a 5D or 5D2. I'm not sure what the increased resolution of the 7D will bring.
Also, I don't know what the shutter speed is, but if this jet is accelerating, then it's probably vibrating like a dog pooping razor blades. Could contribute to the apparent softness.
And, of course, the picture just may not be in focus. Which is what it appears to be in this case. I've shot a few air shows. There are always a few that are not in focus. If this is one of many that are not quite in focus, then there's a problem that needs addressing either through settings, technique, lens microadjustment, or factory adjustment. I would eliminate all variables before accepting or condemning the camera.
I'd like to know how far away that F-15 was from the shooter as the softness to me simply looks like atmospherics caused by warmer temperatures.
The 100-400 performs fine on my 1DsMk3 but i have a pile of shots like thatEagle shot that are caused by warm air and shooting ovewr long distances.
I do air stuff as my number one thing and seen stuff lie this plenty of times so not even considering it camera related..
I will post the pics tomorrow...guess I should have thought about that before I formatted the card...though, I have the files on my computer at work. I just tried it again and overexposed the image a little and it looked very clean so I don't know. But maybe what I read is correct, maybe a light overexpose is all it needs.
Will try a few lenses tomorrow and see what I get. 24L, 50L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 50 1.4 and 100 2.8 Macro. But today on my 50L it looked like crap so I didn't want to use it on a shoot tonight...used it for a couple of shots and it isn't bad but not as good as my 5D.
