You're callin it here and now, eh, Whayne? By God I hope you're right

They can name a camera 'asshole' here in plain english and if it performs well for the right price I'd buy it--hell, embroider my camera strap with the name too, I could care less. Of course, ymmv
I want all the best possible feature "as a whole" in one camera

That is the only way the 15-85 would make sense. I think this could be a good move for Canon since the current 17-85 is a distinctly less-than-wonderful lens that sort doesn't fit much of any particular market segment very well.

It's a shame seeing they have a super 17-55 f/2.8 and a bunch of slow ass f/5.6 lenses, they didn't rpelace the 17-85 with a 15-85 f/4 IS or at least 15-85 f/3.5-4.5 IS. That would appeal much more as a walk around to me.
It would also be the right tool for me at R/C fun fly events, and as a lightweight travel camera with a single superzoom mounted on it. There would be enough resolution to crop out the corners if need be due to the increased reach of the crop. That's my need in a light weight & smaller body, plus the built in flash for under hood shots at car shows or inside restaurants while on vacation etc.

Honestly, the pixel density of the 10.1MP 1D3 sensor, or the 12.8MP 5D sensor was perfectly adequate for me. That was just a sweet spot in resolution. I still haven't seen files that print out as nice as those of low ISO 1d3 or 5D. It just really sucks that they have to keep increasing the resolution when that's clearly not what photogs want (well I suppose new adopters will want the highest resolution possible).
If the sensor is 1.6x and 18MP.... ugh...
Well I don't know maybe 18MP is to the point where it is mostly a waste of space, but I do know the 50D gave noticeably better reach for sports and wildlife compared to my 20D (and 40D) and the 5D2 is far more useful for wildlife/sports than the 5D with its much greater reach. I do miss the reach of the 50D (on the 20D-reach like 5D2) at times.
Now maybe 18MP will help for that stuff when under strong lighting or maybe only so little that it is largely a waster of space, I don't know.

Looking forward to the 5D2n or whatever .... I can keep changing to newer model in a 2 years peroid. Actually camera body resell value is quiet good in HK

I'm right there with you.... I would have loved a 15-85 f/4 IS. Not to mention a fast 15mm or 20mm prime. The 7d should make me content with 1.6 crop for the long haul... just have a gap or two to fill in.
Heh... I didn't know photography is about math formula, I thought it's about taking pretty pictures.
You should go to FM Macro forum here and tell Dalantech that his 5:1 magnification, f/13-16, 40D macro shots aren't sharp because the theoretical sharp aperture with that camera is only f/9.3. I would LOVE to read his response.
This number is the result of a mathematical formula that approximates the aperture where diffraction visibly starts affecting image sharpness when viewed at full-size on a display
Wow. This camera will be really differnet from the 5DII. I really don't see canons strategy in crippling the 5DII so much (well, compared to the 7D). You'd think they would make the 5DII and 7D a simmilar pair as the 1D and 1Ds, no? With the price speculation putting it at around 1700$ it does fit in quite well into their range but feature-wise it wouldn't really work. If I were now looking for a new camera it would most likely be between the 5D II and the 7D. Fullframe (for me atleast) does not weigh more than good, fast reliable AF and reasonable FPS (6 +). But as a second boy, this could pair up quite well with my 5D and complement it. I just don't have a need for 18MP and that WILL kill my computer
To get all possible resoultion out of high pixel-density cameras, processing workflow is even more important than diffraction limits.
You need to shoot RAW, and turn NR completely OFF in the conversion, espesially at LOW ISO (yes, indeed). On my 500D, at ISO100, NR is set by default to level 1-2, and this softens the image just as much as diffraction effects when going from f/8 to f/11.
Failure to turn NR OFF in DPP has spoilt at least one Camera test at DPReview and one lens test at the-digital-picture.com (24/1.4 II, first test, confirmed by the author)
