I think you're close but I think the new camera will be the 3D and will have dual digic. The 5D II will remain as is but will drop in price to about $2000 in order to compete with the new Sony 850. This is just speculation of course!

Thanks Wayne & Orangefirefish for the heads up and explanation.
Haha yeah well then again, it is just a picture anybody could have conjured up in a word processor....! We'll see when this is actually announced. Until then, I've got my fingers crossed that the sensor is at least a 1.3x.

Competition is great & I would love to see the 5DII drop in price but your speculation assumes that Canon Corp will see the Sony 850 as an equal to the 5DII forcing them to be competitive in pricing ...I don't think Canon Corp will necessarily see it like that unless there is a dramatic nose dive in 5DII sales.

If this 7D is real I'm sure it will take a bite. Im waiting for a new camera right now, not to thrilled with the 1.6 but Ill take a good AF system over an antiquated 5D2 AF system anyday. Decisions, Decisions...
I agree we could see something like that. I'm hoping the new AF system for the 3D, 5DIII or whatever will be the same as the 7D. I guess PMA 2010 is going to be for the 1D(s) series and Photokina 2010 for the 5DIII. Seems too far away
I'll just keep shooting with my 5D and dream of my next cam if it ever comes...

Well, aside from the lack of video, I think it pretty much is equal to the 5D II and I do think that Canon takes Sony seriously, So if Sony is going to establish $2000 as the price point for admission to full frame, Canon has to have an answer to that. And a year from now, the 5D II is going to be looking a little old, with sales bound to drop when they bring out a 3D. So it seems logical to me to drop the price of the 5D II to $2000. The alternative would be to design a new full frame camera for that price point, but it would have to have basically the same specs as the 5D II in order to compete with the Sony.

Don't forget that by 2010, there will be D800 from Nikon with the same censor as Sony's with video. D700+video will prove to be a tough competition to 5D II.

The price will fall naturally with changing market conditions, just as the price of the 5D fell (which after all, remains the most affordable full frame camera available even in retirement).
But don't expect the world to rush to Sony's doorstep; the same phenomenon was predicted for the A900, but (some) people are still paying 2x-3x for a Canon 1Ds3 or Nikon D3x. I'm glad Sony is building good products though; competition benefits consumers.
