Paolo beat me to it. Yes marketing. I know some SLR shooters (who should know better) that believe that more megapixels is BETTER, without understanding the impact of more megapixles has on noise and DR.
If the given rumored specs are true the only negative one I found is the increase in megapixels. If the 7D truely has the AF of a 1 series, and noise is not too bad (due to the increase in megapixels), and it is sub $2K, it might be my next camera.

Small photosites don't seem to have that bad of an effect, they may even slighyl help low ISO DR even if maybe slightly hurting high ISO performance compared to larger photosites of the same technology. But the difference it probably a lot smaller than the huge difference in detail you can get under the right circumstances with say 15MP vs 8MP.
Very difficult balance to judge between detail/DR/diffraction/sensor noise at various ISO levels. I expect as you say it may be a case of swings and roundabouts. I'm sure the G11 has taken a resolution cut for a reason but perhaps APS-C isn't even close to that point yet. Nevertheless, ever more densely packed sensors will require steadier hands/better IS and higher AF precision to get the best out of them.

We can only hope that they will never, ever bump into ISO/noise issues either.
It's all a trade off, isn't it? I know that if I shove my ISO up high, I'll get more noise, so I keep the ISO as low as it needs to be to get the shot, and I've got a workflow which is very well tailored to deal with high ISO noise.
I know that diffraction is a possibility beyond [some arbitrary aperture depending on the camera and lens in use] so I'll avoid shooting that way. I'm lucky I can do that, because - for me - getting plenty of light in, getting high shutter speeds and blurring the background are infinitely more important than having everything from the front of the scene to the horizon in focus, so I'm always shooting at as wide an aperture as I can get away with.
Diffraction is one of those things that can be a problem, but that doesn't mean it is a problem....
This would be a very interesting camera for what I do, if ISO 800 is clean and the AF/AI are top notch. But I'll wait on the early adopters to ring it out.

Honestly, the pixel density of the 10.1MP 1D3 sensor, or the 12.8MP 5D sensor was perfectly adequate for me. That was just a sweet spot in resolution. I still haven't seen files that print out as nice as those of low ISO 1d3 or 5D. It just really sucks that they have to keep increasing the resolution when that's clearly not what photogs want (well I suppose new adopters will want the highest resolution possible).
If the sensor is 1.6x and 18MP.... ugh...

How do you know? Frankly, I thought the same thing about the 50D until I actually tried one.

Not quite true. The 50D was a relatively poor seller compared to the 20D/30D/40D
Really? I thought the 30D did pretty poorly as most 20D owners had no reason to upgrade. I didn't nor did any of my friends with 20D cameras. Whatever, I had to wait on a list for 2 weeks to get my 50D last fall, so a lot of dumb asses musta wanted it for some reason. And of course there was the matter of the 800 pound gorilla in the room (slow economy)...
Donno if people here notice that the sound from "7D" in HongKong language sound exactly the meaning "idiot" it is a very insulting voice in cantonese, I think they will use another name to sell in HK

Whether or not your statement is true, keep in mind that the (world-wide) economy imploded as it (the 50D) was being released and it's barely gotten better since then. Despite the economy, several of my friends 'jumped' on the 50D in greater proportion than I previously saw with other releases.

They can name a camera 'asshole' here in plain english and if it performs well for the right price I'd buy it--hell, embroider my camera strap with the name too, I could care less. Of course, ymmv
I can see that 15-85IS replacing the 17-85IS but what are they thinking with the 18-135? The 18-200 is only one year old.
It's all about an abundance of choice for the newbies. I'd assume (probably incorrectly) the 18-135 is cheaper than an 18-200 and represents the digital version of the old 28-200 FF lense and having a smaller zoom range the IQ might be better. The posted MTF curves look decent.
It's interesting Canon hasn't felt inclined to release crop fast primes.

Excuse my ignorance but what is that on the front of the grip that looks like a sensor?
No idea but it's placement is rather strange seeing as though it'll be covered with your finger...maybe it's a 'auto idle' sensor, when the camera is not being held by the grip it shuts off, when gripped it turns on? Obviously that's a complete stab in the dark

High ISO performance and AF performance are critical features and both are deciding factors for me. As for the 5DMKIII, I think we have a bit of time before we hear any news about it...
5D IIn Photokina 2010, with the new AF, single digic V (almost as fast as 2 digic IV), 6fps, 1stop improved noise at pixel level, flash master, and many other features of the 7D.
