think back again and look up what competition shipped at the 40D time.
the fact you mentioned the 30D (ie. 20D mkII) is really absurd

Eh?
The 40D is different in every functional respect to the 30D - they share no end-result critical components whatsoever, with everything in the 40D being new and (IMHO) clearly improved.
If that's "auto-pilot* and "resting on their laurels" keep it coming.
Pretty much every technical/academic paper I have read coming out of western Europe, those two acronyms are left wholly in English. Actually, anywhere in the world.

Daniel you maybe right and I do not want to create polemic. I belong to another product line (PC, notebook and desktop) which is manage under the same legal requirement of the electronic industry... in all European countries, some LA countries and even in Canada, it is mandatory by law that all contents are translated including acronyms...You can reach some funny things that are even not used by anyone in the country (such as CD-RW in French translated by CDR Compact Disque Re-inscriptible and CD-R by CDI! or Ecran a Cristaux Liquides ECL for LCD)
Now that said, I have to agree with your comment I am not aware of any mix usage of these 2 acronyms: this add looks weird...But Sean comment was pretty thoughtful IMO
That's funny; my 20D has a metal hot shoe. If you're referring to a black-painted hot shoe, yes the 20D has that. Can you tell the camera in the photo doesn't?

Not a loyal minion, just tired of all the Canon bashing.
Whinging Canon owners like you are worse than those Nikon trolls who come in here to beat on a dead horse. Noone force you to stay with Canon so if you're really unhappy with Canon's offering, just change system already. Why are you risking your health stressing out over Canon? If you can't afford it then all I can say is "beggars can't be choosers".
I shoot Canon because I prefer their products, though I've found plenty to criticize over the years. Having owned other brands, I can tell you there is nothing magical in the competition. Each system has strengths (and weaknesses).
Have no idea what the "7D" will be (if there is such a camera). I do know that something new will come eventually, and that a bunch of folks will find things to complain about.

They've actually brought the numbers down, to the point that even if demand is less, there's still a perceived demand because they simply aren't cranking the gear out fast enough.
RDKirk wrote:No, I don't agree, not at all. For every manufacturer, especially for Canon and Nikon, there is rather short supply in the first months when demand seems to be frantic … then demand levels off to meet the planned supply.
Manufacturers will not size production capacity to meet that initial demand Internet....Show more →
www.nowinstock.net reports present availability for cameras. I don't need Canon 5DII sales numbers to realize that 5DII monthly sales in August 2009 are vastly lower than they were in December 2008, when it was first introduced. In December 2008, on average, two to three of the major retailers out of ten had 5DII in stock. Today as I write this, zero of 10 major retailers have 5DII in stock.
RDKirk, do you still have this fantasy that in August 2009, Canon cannot meet the astounding demand for 5DII?
I think, along with Cineski, that Canon has made a clear and conscious decision to keep the 5DII in perpetual short supply, NO MATTER HOW LOW THE DEMAND IS. It appears to be their idea of marketing, of continuing the illusion of excessive high demand.
When reporting financial results at the end of July, Canon stated despite contractions in many parts of their business that the 5DII was selling well. Why theorize that a high quality, ethical company like Canon is executing some conspiracy? Maybe it is just a different business climate where product supply is just being carefully managed at all levels in the supply chain. The credit that retailers need to carry inventory has not been as available during this period. There are many sensible explanations.
I do think that Canon or perhaps Canon USA specifically, may be shifting inventory
to smaller dealers to weaken the retail power of the megastores such as B&H.
One might wonder why Canon doesn't raise prices even more, since they can
evidently sell all of what they make at current prices, with shortages at the larger
retailers. But assuming they don't want to do that for whatever reason, I can see
why they might take this chance to starve the retailers that exercise some degree
of pricing power over them and instead feed the smaller guys who won't be able
to bargain for lower wholesale prices when production picks up in the future.
