Right- which is why I don't believe a 60d is coming in august (the 1dm4 is). They've just standardized on 15mp, the screen on the 50d is brand new (and now becoming the standard), and it is (IMHO) highly unlikely that they are going to upgrade the AF to "pro" standards. All that leaves is video, which is hardly a reason to come out with a new camera when the 50d has only been on shelves for 10 months.
My hunch is that the 1d4 will be announced the end of the month, with 18mp APS-H, video, and the new 920kp screen. In february they'll put 18mp in an APS-C 60d with video, and then the rebels will begin coming out with 18mp mid to late next year.
You guys really need to quit reading canonrumors; that site is predominantly wish lists and guesses. A week or two before the launch they start getting good info, but the rest of the time it is somebody's fantasy that just sets you up for disappointment....Show more →
I agree, it's too soon for the 60D, but then they did the same with the 50D and I assume HD video has been planned for a long time. Given the D300s and D90 which sit either side of the 50D, have video Canon might think they should offer it ASAP. I hope though they don't just release a HD video version of the 50D, as we'll have to wait another 12-18 months for better AF at least.

Yes, but NOWHERE near the sales of 20D, 30D and 40D.
Consumers have spoken with their wallets and sent a very strong message to Canon: time for Canon to buck up.
If Canon disappoints again, they will be out of the game much sooner than they think.
I'm not sure any one of us can know what 50D sales have been or whether they have matched expectations.
Go to the B&H Web site and count the number of reviews for the 40D, 50D, D300, and D90 (as a *very* rough gauge of popularity), then apply an adjustment to factor in the length of time each model has been on the market...cut the 50D some slack since the majority of its market life has coincided with a biggest recession in 50 years...
I think it's safe to say that all these cameras are selling pretty well, 50D included.

So I will venture to say that probably a 3" OLED screen for a consumer SLR, where price is VERY important, would likely, at this time, put the camera at a price point above what is desirable.
Well, well, well... for you cynics who doubt that OLED screens on cameras are around the corner, take a good look at this.

Yes, I admit no one knows the exact figures.
But based on actual DSLR sales in Japan (BCNRanking) as well as interest levels shown on DPReview reviews over long periods of time, I think it's safe to say the 50D is definitely not doing as well as the 20D/30D/40D although much better than the D300.

I'd get a dedicated one if i really want to shoot videos.
I'm more just imagining someone in BestBuy or whatever comparing the 50D with one of the Nikons, and the salesman saying 'Of course the Nikon shoots HD video as well'.
If you're not already invested in a system, it's no contest really.
I'm actually surprised Canon is still in the game at all at the consumer level, it seems to be leaning on the huge advantage it once had.
If you're not a big internet researcher, and you walk into any sort of Camera shop to buy your first SLR, I'd have to say that after several years of modest warm-overs, that Canon is one of the less-impressive options at the lower- to mid-range.
Unfortunately, all the other "specs" on CR about the 60D still read like a wish list, or more accurately like features of the 1d4 (with the exception of the frame rate): APS-H, 19 pt AF, new screen, 16-18MP, digic V, video.
Despite the crow feathers on my plate, putting an OLED screen on an essentially disposable camera is far different than a flagship DSLR that will be in service for 5 to 10 years. Nikon may have overcome the long term problems, but they may just as likely expect people to toss those P&S's when the screens die.

What, you mean there are no real facts about up coming Canon cameras out there, dam!
Are you saying canonrumors is not true?!??!?
I just sold my 50D, 1D Mk III, and my 70-200 IS to beat the rush and buy a new 60D, 1D Mk IV, and 70-200. Well, I'm not sure if the 70-200 was on canonrumors, but some guy over on dpreview said it was coming and sold his 70-200.
So you're wrong, Pix! I've got proof too. There's a post on dpreview about the screen protector for the 60D being on Amazon's web site. Bet ya feel stooopid now!
I'm gonna go order my screen protector now .... and a six pack of disposable cameras on ebay so I have something to shoot with until my new gear arrives ...
I'm sure the 60D specs will only be competitive against upcoming Sony releases. Canon probably views Nikon as a close pal and has no intention of stealing Nikon's market.
