p.1 #1 · Err 99 Canon 40D

I've had this 40D for about 18 months, use it as a poor mans 1Dmk3 for shooting sports.

I got a persistent ERR 99 today. DId all this as recommended:

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Here's an example of an image that came off of this. All prior images were correctly exposed.

looks like I need to send this in but I need the camera in about 3 weeks and if this is not recoverable, then I'll look for a used 1Dmk3 quickly. Anybody have any idea what this problem is?

Camera has about 10K clicks on it. It's been used in all sorts of temp extremes - I shoot alpine skiing with it - but it should not have been subjected to condensation since I'm really careful about that.

Any thoughts?

How many lenses does this happen with? Looks like lens aperture may be stuck.

Check it with some other lenses.

Err 99 came on at least 3 lenses on 4 different batteries and 3 different memory cards. It's definitely the body.

I believe that the white band at the side is indicative of a shutter problem since the shutter is a strip opening of preset width that moves over the sensor.

Bad shutter. Send it to Canon.

Any idea on how much it costs to fix and how long?

Since I use this as a poor man's 1DMk2/3, my other thought was to dig deep and get a used one of either.

My 40D got a new shutter last month after ERR99. 3 months out of warranty. $201. Took about 10 days to get it back.

I also just bought a 1D Mark II... looking forward to it.

How does the 1D mk II do at higher ISO (i.e. 800)?

same problem happened to me, ERR 99, no matter what I did..changing lenses or batteries. Turned out to be a broken shutter, Canon Irvine fixed it for free even though the camera was 3 months out of warranty and had about 20k of actuations. I live in Orange County so I brought my camera in and picked it up a week later.

That's what I was hoping for, but they sent the e-mail with the ransom note. Maybe it's harder to charge someone for a broken shutter in person.

Seems the 40D's got shutter issues, I just sent mine in today for the same problem, had only about 10K on it. Hope my Canon tech guy will be as kind to service it for free.

Good luck getting it serviced for free! I responded to you other post on this matter which is shutter failure on my camera. Randsome $200 including shipping and I had to use a charge card to have them proceed. Otherwise, it was going to cost me $20 just to have the camera returned without repair.

Normally, I would hand carry it to the Irvine service center locally but was away and will need it returned in the Mid-West so I sent it to NJ this time. Maybe that was a mistake on my part.

My Err99 was a shutter failure as well. Also from the pic, looks like that with the white band on the right side.

If you can drop off it's always better... face time counts for something. Niceness and a smile will get you lots. They fixed my 20D on an ERR99 2 months out of warranty at the NJ office as well.
