A couple of images with the 85L from last Sunday's "40's Glamour" shoot. Most of the shoot was done with the 24-70L, as I needed the wider angle of view. To see the other images, check out the people photography forum.
nice images - thanks --> the first one looks kinda wide u must have been quite a distance away?

Nice shot, but the bokeh looks kinda funky is some places. Haven't seen the 85L act like that before. Was it caused by the processing?

Very funky bokeh. I wonder what caused it -- aggressive curves manipulation? Unusual sharpening?

It cause by the B&W conversion! I killed 2 colors channels to creat a better separation of the boysa from the water. so it created a funky bokeh which I liked and kept. As usual, it's not the lens, it's me...

The goold ol' 85/1.2. A lens so amazing that despite it having such sluggish AF performance that I sometimes feel I could just leave the focus ring in a random position and walk to a distance from the subject in which it is in focus faster than the AF mechanism can get the job done, and it very rarely comes out to play for paying work, I still love it to death and refuse to sell it.
I remember when I first got the lens and kept playing DOF games like some of the above photos. Since then I've calmed down, but DOF like that is still fun sometimes. So is having a lens as close to zero EV lighting requirements as any pure glass out there.
Just so everyone who hasn't shot this lens doesn't just think it's all fun and games for people with budgets that can afford completely ridiculous glass, I want you to understand that while it's by no means a primo bread winner of a lens, it does have it's uses in the studio. Also, believe it or not, it has a place in sports action photography -- zone focussed in really crappy lighting that just doesn't allow much else, the 85/1.2 and 135/2 may be the only lenses in your kit to get any kind of photos in amateur (read: no TV lights) indoor courts. Just don't bother leaving the AF switch in the "on" position. Frankly, I don't understand why they even bothered making it AF at all.
Anyhow, the point here is to post favorite pix with the 85. I'm really torn as several of my all time very favorites are with this lens, but to contrast the above fun-and-games shots, here's a money shot where the 85 really was the best option (had to shoot from above, tight circumstances location shoot, needed to do it fast and only one strobe.) No fun DOF games, and shot at f/8 where most lenses look their best, but no one ever seems to post money shots with the 85/1.2, so being a contrarian...
Nothing special about this shot, except the light source you see in the picture. It was pitch black and i had to actually first manually focus to get the focus right (the lighter kept going off, it was very windy) and then wait for it to light up again to take the shot. It was very brief.
Gotta love the lens though ... but the ca wide open is sometimes killing me (only in harsh light though) and the focus sometimes misses by a mile ..... no ... ten miles!

Nice shot ---> In my experience however, the focus is extremely accurate (although slow), and the CA wide open is very acceptable.
