p.1 #1 · Body ranking at ~ $1200

Hello All, this is my first post on the forum. So please bear with me

Currently I'm using a Rebel XT with a battery grip and in the near future, I'd like to move on to a higher end body. Considering I'm not a pro and I like to shoot more for pleasure than to sell the images, I cannot go all out on the purchase of a body. As such, I'm setting a ceiling of about $1200 (give or take). If I could, I would just pick up a used 5D. However the 5D seems to still be in demand and the price for a used body is still pushed up beyond what I'm comfortable spending.

That being said, I typically enjoy shooting wide angles, so a larger sensor than the APS-C is appealing. Right off the bat, I looked at the used camera stores and found that a 1DS or a 1DII can each be had at or around $1200. Now, I understand that each camera has its own uses. I like the idea of low noise on the 1D2, but the larger sensor for wider shots is also appealing in the 1DS. Though, the raw tif images seem less desirable than the CR2 images.

However, on the other end, I can purchase a brand new 50D with a battery grip for about the same price. Moreover, I would not have to worry about camera repairs on used gear and I'd have the benefit of the newest tech. So, if it were between a used 1D2 (not N), 1DS and 50D, what would you go for?

You can find a 5D for $1200. It's such a logical choice for what you want, don't even bother with the other stuff. You will never, ever look back.

Where at? Ebay auctions and Craigslist have turned up few bodies sub$1400 (though, I'm not a fan of bidding wars). Used stores like KEH and Adorama are pricing them at $1400+ for poor quality bodies.

Is the Buy and Sell forum "pay and pray"?

I find it difficult to simply trust someone on the internet. That's all.

Also, while the overwhelming enthusiasm is to find a 5D and go for that, I'm curious if people are willing to offer any opinions on how a 1D2 compares to the 5D. Or, more appropriately, why a 5D would be more beneficial than a 1D2 (aside from the size of the sensor frame).

There's always a chance of something going south, but that's rare today (unlike years ago) and most people that have been here for a while will honor their agreements.

Why not use the search feature?

Basically, the 5d's pixel density is equal to that of the 1D2 but extended to FF. The 5d's real advantage is in great IQ and the sensor's better ISO performance. The 1Ds's advantage is in everything else.

5D - Full frame, D series build
1D2 - 1.3 crop, Series 1 build (tank like)
Nuff said
OK I own a 1D2 and love it. It is blazing fast in focus and frame rate.....but my shots are mainly sports and wildlife. Both are quality cameras so IMHO you cannot go wrong with either of them.

The buy and sell forum here is top notch. In my limited dealings I have had no problems. Look at the total posts and their feedback record.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the board ..... you have found a typical family.........some funny, some sullen, but all love photography.

To answer your first question, the buy and sell forum requires you to subscribe and pay in order to sell. Most scammers are not going to pay only to sell one thing and leave. That is also the reason we have feedback for sellers as well as buyers. Fred Miranda is like a family of photographers and I suggest you hang around a while and get to know us before passing judgement.

For you second question. You said you want to go wide and that is why everyone suggest a used 5D. The 1DII is a 1.3 crop sensor and even though it is not a bad camera the IQ of the 5D will win everytime. Also the 5D will allow you to shoot at higher ISO's with less noise compared to the 1DII or 1Ds. Trust me I know as I have owned a MKIIn.

The great thing about the BS forum here is you can see the feedback of the buyer and seller right under their name. So you can buy with confidence

Trust everyone on the 5D, you wont look back.

Outdoor Sports = 1D2
Indoor Sports = 50D
Portraits/landscape = 5D

Be careful when buying used 5D's and xxD's as there is no simply way of getting a actuation count. For example I have two 1D2's that both look mint, one has 8,000 actuation, the other has been through 2 shutters and 450,000 actuation's. A program called cancount can tell you how much action the 1D2's have. I have also found repairs on the 1D2 to be relatively cheap.

Thanks to all for the replies.

One last question before I stop slacking and get back to work: If I choose to go for a 1D2 over a 5D (simply because of the price), would that be a worthy investment at this juncture (being that it's 2009 and it was discontinued 4 years ago already) or am I just going to find myself in a world of hurt?

The 1D2 will hold it's value better then the 50D and close to the 5D. Because the 1D2 doesn't lack much in any category you will have a capable camera in two years. I have printed 24x36 posters that looked amazing at 8mp with my 1D2's. The only fault's with the 1D2 vs the 1D3 regarding IQ is high ISO performance. (Above 1600)

Not to go against convention here, but you could get a Rebel XSi and a EF-S 10-22mm for around $1200 or so. Way cheaper if you go used. That'll take care of your wide angle needs with a 1.6x camera...

Just buy the 5D and get on with it. You can find it for about $1200 and by all accounts is the camera you want. Probably $1500 with a grip.

Buying the even older 1DII will be a disappoinment unless you really need a pro body and are willing to lug it around. It is noisy, has some banding issues, and is heavy. Yes, it is weather sealed, looks cool, built like a tank, and has a fast shutter....but you have not indicated that means anything to you.
