I'm glad that they didn't put this in a 5D2 and call it 5D3. Even if they have a bunch of 5D2 in the warehouse, they could always slap an 'I' sticker beside the "Mark II" label, both on the camera body and the box , and charge $500 more. May be they are desperate and the economy crisis is hitting them hard?
Cool update! I didn't expect this - instead I suspected that Canon would upgrade the video feature only in a new 1D camera series. Fortunately Canon recognized the demand of full manual controls in the video mode of most of the 5D II users. I also suspect that Canon realized that a lot of people started using alternate manual lenses with their 5D II which might have affected Canon's lens market negatively.

Hey, thanks Dave makes sense. If you want properly exposed video do you first meter in still mode with your preferred aperture, then switch to video mode?
Not a technically correct explanation but in layman terms it works, you are welcome.
Great! Cannot wait to download the firmware update... but maybe I have to get a 5d2 first
More seriously: could it be Canon anticipating a new coming Nikon in July?
I`ve never attempted video with the 5d2, I`m also confused. I`d love to have a go.
So! You set the exposure before pushing the button? or does this firmware upgrade mean you can do change exposure whilst on the fly by shutter speed or aperture?
Do AF lenses still AF during video or do you have to stop recording and refocus? or can you push a button to get the AF lens to focus?
Do Image Stabilised lenses still work during video?
Sorry for the questions, maybe there is a site specifically for 5d2 video shooting?
What ever, by the way some people are raving about the upgrade it must make a big difference.

Not true at all, simply another case of Canon Marketing getting in the way of the engineers.

I have very little technical knowledge about this so all I can say is that I have more belief in the skills of the engineers than in the common sense of the Marketing executives.
Marketing departments seldom have any power in large corporations...I think it's a bit unfair to blame them when the blame should be attributed to the development teams instead - i.e. the engineers.

I imagine you might still have control of the aperture once you are recording, but I imagine the ISO and shutter speed would be set before starting to record.
For AF, you would need to stop recording to focus; the AF sensors need to have the mirror in the 'down' position in order to work and in Live View/Video mode the mirror is up.
IS does work in Video, quite brilliantly I might add. Though where the microphone is located on the body it will pick up the IS noise.
Currently the only control you have in video mode is to change the exposure compensation between -2 and +2.

I work in a large corporation and marketing department have a lot of power.....
So, I just got my 5d mk2 a couple of weeks ago and now am really excited about it. As others have said, the AF is fine for fast moving objects with a bit of practice. Now, I have to learn how to use these new features.
What are your favorite online sources of information on how to make and process good video with the 5d, besides the cinema5d.com site referenced above?

Probably not related to your question, I find that the built in mic would pick up the clicking sound from the 2 dials when they are rotated. So I imagine if exposure can be changed on the fly, it would "need" an external mic.
I wonder if they would come out with a firmware release to fix the clicking sound of the dial.

There are a few AF mode options, and I like to use the contrast detection, or "quick mode" I believe it's called. It does not need to close the mirror back down first, it focuses on the fly as you are taking video, only limitation is that it only focuses once so if people are moving it won't constantly re-focus like AI SERVO or something.

In short: this makes the video mode super useful!
