p.1 #1 · Photography Orgs/Conferences

I've searched online and through the forums for keywords I could come up with on this subject, but have been unsuccessful (though the answer is probably here somewhere).

What are some photographer's organizations/groups that are considered professional, as well as any annual meetings/conferences/conventions dealing with photographic technology and composition/style/art? My "employer" has the ability to cover sending me to such events, and I am interested to see what else is out there.

Check out what I have listed at the top of this page.

Look on each organizations web site calendar & events page to see what annual national or regional conferences or meetings they have scheduled.

Hope that helps, & happy exploring.

I just spent a great week at the Texas School sponsored by Texas Professional Photographers Association, a state affiliate of the PPA. There were 1038 students from 43 states and 4 countries. The instructors were the cream-de-la-creme of their fields: weddings, commercial, art, Photoshop, Lightroom, Painter, and every other aspect you might want. Workshops are limited to about 25 students each.
Check it out on the Texas professional Photographers web site. It is an annual event usually held the end of April or first of May.

I went to PMA and Imaging USA this year. Imaging USA was head and shoulders above PMA as far as educational offerings. If you can go, go. It is in Nashville next year (January). Here is the class schedule from 2009.

http://www.imagingusa.org/schedule.php

Very cheap ($219) if you are a PPA member and you get a free buddy pass so you can bring someone else at no cost.

Imaging USA also has a large SEPCON pre-conference track. Very good.

What about summer workshops?

* Maine

* Santa Fe

* Anderson Ranch

All offer world-class instruction in specific areas.

From "Introduction to Lightroom", to "Designing and Publishing a Photo Book" with Douglas Holleley, to "Imaging the Environment" with Robert ParkeHarrison and Shana ParkeHarrison (worth looking up the last 2 if you are not familiar with their work.)

Those are all at Anderson Ranch in Colorado:

How about "Location Photography and Lighting" with Joe McNally at Santa Fe? Never really heard of the guy, but I guess he works for magazines or something?

I will second this conference/workshop! It is a great experience and the knowledge that is available and shared is awesome. Texas School is a great investment. It is supported by many of the big name companies such as Canon, Nikon, MAC, WHCC, Millers, H&H, etc.

PMA is primarily an opportunity for manufacturers to show their wares to retailers. PMA's target audience is working photographers.
