Unfortunately the lens has been discontinued. Shucks, I almost had enough to get me a new one! Now I'm going to have to buy it used :-p

I'm willing to bet he reviewed that same copy as the one in BH. The review is very recent and the reviewer has a relationship with BH. I also understand these aren't that common.
Well here's your chance to own a lens personally reviewed by the-digital-picture.com...

Honest, Tom, wouldn't know what to do with that behemoth of a lens even if it was free.
Actually, it wouldn't help me much either. Perhaps for those occasional shots of the moon or for some really distant bird shots. Not worth the price of admission, unless I win the big lottery. Then I'd buy it for use as a chick magnet.

Ducks in Flight
The 1200mm MFD is about 46 ft according to the Canon Museum data.
I shoot ducks around 15-30 ft distant. I usually use 200/300/400 lenses for that.
No, the 1200 couldn't get me the shots that the $650 300mm f/4 non-IS gets me, like this one.
if that lens in the review (which is the B+H one) is soft wide open but is sharp at f8 (according to the review) I wounder how the 800 + 1.4 TC staks up?

No need to bet. He says it openly: So when B&H Photo called to invite me to review this lens, I of course said "Yes!".

Peter, I'm pretty sure someone like you would be able to find a way to shoot ducks in flight with it.
BTW, I'm still waiting for those taken with an MPE...
On a side note, if I won the lottery, I would buy it without a second thought.
Amazing lens.

I agree I don't think there is a lens made that Peter has had in his collection that he hasn't gotten a Duck or ducks in flight shot.
I heard through the grapevine that Peter's MPE shots are at 5x.

Needs a trip to canon to have it calibrated, that's all
Wow, imagine how much that'd cost? I'm guessing there's no way they'd even touch it, probably have to send it to like 1 of 2 people in Japan at the plant that know it well enough.
