Thanks Peter! I've put them up in the N&W forum to see what the fellas have to say about them! Hehe... funny I really should post more stuff there instead of here. Haha!

Not a bad idea.
I think that on the N&W Board there is a bit too much of perfunctory "Great shot, buddy.", whether the shot is great, average or sorely lacking.
Therefore, you must get yourself into that reciprocating "Great shot, buddy." round robbin by posting and commenting on people's images a lot.
However, there are a few individuals there who have the experience and are willing to take the time to give you a quality/useful critique.

Tried to give that owl a bit more zip while darkening the background highlite....it can perhaps pass for a late evening, dusky light.
However, I suspect that one would have been hard to process even in its original form.

Wow thanks Peter! Looks much better. And yes it was hard to process all around with that white stripe of sky.

I think your owl would benefit from a little more sharpening and pop to separate the owl from the background (took all of one minute):

Nice... Very nice.... Thanks Wing! So being tired of my semi-dry spell, I went back to the creek and it did not disappoint! Oh man wait till you see them! I'll put them up later.

Dude, I am jealous of your creek! I don't think I've found a creek like yours but I did find something about 10 minutes drive, it's very entertaining, and has potentials:

I see! Well they look good man. You shot dragons with the 400mm too? Cool! Can't wait to see them. So being that you have both the 300 and 400, which one do you like to use more and why? Do you get a sense that the 400 AF is quicker than the 300?

I'm thinking of getting the 500mm next. I think the 500 + the 50D would make a pretty formidable combo. Not too sure if I can use it for BIF shots thought! Haha!

It magnifies more and fills the screen. What are you using to micro adjust your lenses (testing)for best captures?

I got the 400mm at +7 micro adjust. Super sharp for my 50D. You gotta put it on a tripod and shoot several shots to see where it is for your rig. I spent a whole afternoon obsessing about it getting mine just right! Haha!

Conrad -

You know, if you get the 500mm, we won't let you post on this thread anymore.... Check out some of the posts on the "Nature & Wildlife" forum... lots of fabulous BIF shots with the 500mm and probably the 50D too.

I have the 400/5.6 and 500/4 (thanks to an understanding wife) and find that sometimes the sound of the IS and/or the reflection from the larger front glass surface spooks the critters (when I'm working close-in), something I don't get with the 400. But, if you get the 500, you'll not be sorry for the IQ. It's a marvelous lens.

If you get the 500, be sure to budget for the Bushhawk and Wimberly QR mount. I also put a Wimberly P5 Arca-Type Universal Quick Release Plate on the bottom of the Bushhawk, so I can use my monopod with RRS Hi-Capacity Monopod Head with B2-Pro II. Expensive, but well worth it in terms of versatility.
