Being an owner of the MKI I can tell you that isn't true. The lens (MKI) is very sharp, yes, but there is room for improvement (especially if you want to use the lens with a TC). I can assure you that most people looking to upgrade from the MKI to the MKII are not looking to do so solely for the extra stop of IS effectiveness--they will do so mainly for the IQ boost the MKII is reported to have.
I'm in the same boat. I don't really care about the extra stop of IS, I care more about IQ boost, even though my MkI is already very good.
I did read a review here from a MkII user who said that there is also an AF improvement, as it's faster and more accurate. That would be an added bonus. Despite the Mk1 already having good AF, it's still not as accurate or fast as say, the 135L, so you do have a lower keeper rate. With the MkII he was getting a higher keeper rate than with the Mk1 in low light and that's a thing of beauty.
I still don't like the huge price increase though so I can't see myself upgrading any time soon.
looks like a great versatile lens - great news for pros, and a few enthusiasts.
but the huge price gap between the 2.8 non-IS and the new IS version will probably drive a great many enthusiasts to stick to the former - restricting sales of this lens even more to a smaller segment of the possible purchasing public.
maybe canon couldn't avoid this with a new lens of this quality, and/or maybe canon didn't intend this for enthusiasts in the first place. either or, there's something D3X-ish about the pricing.
That's a keeper, Jonesy. Another benefit of the new lens could be less sample variation than what prevailed with the older version. Less of a crap shoot and more satisfied users.
Sorry to keep posting this stuff...guess I am trying to justify the price of it just like everyone else. I didn't have a 70-200..I sold mine a while back but I missed it doing family and portrait sessions. So I figured instead if buying MKI for 1799 id spring for the new one. Even though I really want the 200/2 or 300 2.8 for my shooting pleasure since I prob couldnt use the 300 at weddings lol. But figured the 70-200 would get good use to compliment my primes.

imported in LR amd just adjusted the exposure/blacks
Thats it
Which means that these have default sharpening applied if I am not mistaken.
Can you do me a favor and lower the sharpening to zero and post some crops?
Any way you could post a comparison similar to the bag of chips one at base ISO? It looks to me like the noise in the images is causing the difference between the lenses (if there is any appreciable one) to be obscured.
Just look at the R on the far right, sharper on the 85. I would want to see the edges of the frame , not really the center and on a full frame body to tell how much better the Mark II version is compared to anything. Taking a section of the center of the frame really doesn't prove much as you would hope that would be sharp.
It looks like people will have to pixel peep to see any difference in image quality. Regular posted images and prints most likely won't show any differences unless the prints get extreme. I would think anything under 12x18 and you will not be able to tell which lens took which photo.

Depends how much you crop doesnt it? Also this lens has to look forward to the 1D5, 1Ds4, 1Ds5 etc.. 1Ds5 likely what 40-50mp?

Correct,
I also would like see how the new 70-200 performs in terms of sharpness at the borders on a full frame (1Ds MK III or 5D MK II)
There are more lenses around which a pretty sharp in the center.
