IMHO, the 70-200 MII is sharper w/ best contrast and richer colors then the MkI. I would like to see the MkII compared to the 70-200 f4 IS. If it beats out that lens then its worth the extra weight, bulk, and price.

Wow Savas. Nothing wrong with those at all. As for exporting, I export at 96 DPI, since Macs use that screen rate. I think the newer windows systems are now using 96 as well. 72 DPI is now old school.
Uhhh, me thinks you got it backwards...
72 DPI was a MAC OS printing limitation, not a windows limitation... Just like 2.2 gamma, it has taken apple quite a while to catch up with many/most things, even if they tell their too often fooled users they're the leader..

Sorry to keep posting this stuff...guess I am trying to justify the price of it just like everyone else.
, thanks Jonesy. I just ordered mine yesterday and have my fingers crossed. I sold my 70-200 F4, which I liked, but I needed IS. I figured, if you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly. These shots look great and I expect to be pleased. I just need to start strength training.
Just curious.. are all canon lens cap the same as shown on the 70-200 (side pinch)? I don't own any canon slr gear, but I do own an older Nikon lens with same type of lens cap. I much prefer the new Nikon caps. The pinch tabs are located in the center of the cap so its much easier to mount the cap on with hood on lens. Do the side pinch canon caps make it harder to put it on lens with the hood?

Yes, Canon uses side-pinch caps. There have been occasional threads here about using alternative center-pinch lens caps for Canon lenses...I purchased a couple of side-pinch caps but in reality, it makes very little difference (for me). Once I'm shooting (either for personal or business) the issue of the lens cap becomes irrelevant for me...once the cap comes off, it doesn't go back on until I'm packing up.

I'm in the same boat. I don't really care about the extra stop of IS, I care more about IQ boost, even though my MkI is already very good.
I did read a review here from a MkII user who said that there is also an AF improvement, as it's faster and more accurate. That would be an added bonus. Despite the Mk1 already having good AF, it's still not as accurate or fast as say, the 135L, so you do have a lower keeper rate. With the MkII he was getting a higher keeper rate than with the Mk1 in low light and that's a thing of beauty.
I still don't like the huge price increase though so I can't see myself upgrading any time soon. ...Show more →
I doubt Canon expects too many folks upgrading their current, excellent version. It's probably geared more towards new sales, and improving their product line, especially versus their competition. I too won't be upgrading. Now if they came out with a similarly upgraded (IQ and 4 stop IS) 100-400, I'd definitely upgrade. Also, I would imagine that they're also targeting wedding photographers who would probably be among those who could benefit the most from the improvements.
I have the MkI, and I wasn't thinking of upgrading... but... starting to wonder. I've been considering getting the 135L & 200L and getting a bit more prime. For just the price of a 135L, I could upgrade the 70-200 which is one of my favorite lenses. Hmmmm...

Somewhat ironically, I use Tamron lens caps on all of my L lenses for this reason. I like how they have the center-pinch (or on the edge), and its easier with the lens hoods.

I'd say get the 135L, it's a damn fantastic lens.

While there are a large number of people that have no desire to upgrade there is also a large number of people who look forward to. The MKI can be better than it is, and the MKII looks to fill the void many have with the MKI. Hell, some owners that are happy with their current copy may just upgrade to have the best of the best. Having said that I don't think its a clear cut case as to what percentage of people will be buying for the first time compared to those who will be upgrading.
I thought the new coatings/elements were supposed to take care of CA...makes me wonder what that shot would look like if it were at f/2.8. As for flare, not sure why you would have any in that shot regardless--the lens was not subjected directly to a bright light source.
