Is it just me, or does the Mark II look better than the Mark I?

I am unaware of any other, 200mm and under zoom lens, that has a Flourite lens.

Sigma's new 70-200mm OS has FLD elements, which are supposedly better than flourite, I believe.

That's more convincing . It looks, only it looks at this point, that the MarkII is indeed better than the classic version even without any direct comparison.

Is this straight out of the camera or with PP?

I think it's a combination of camera settings, DPP noise reduction settings and subject matter. The sharpness was set to 3 out of 7. Unfortunately looking at the EXIF of one of the photos in DPP does not tell me what the DPP NR settings were. If any luminance NR was set it will blur the image slightly. At 2.8 the plane of sharpness is quite narrow and maybe wasn't the best choice of subject matter. Flowers do have fine detail, but can often look plastiky

Thanks - I'm sure that more and better results are in your future and realized that these were likely done pretty hastily just for the sake of the unboxing thread but I wanted to open the subject in case the lens was prematurely condemned by a viewer more inclined to keep his/her thoughts to themself.

Nikon uses similar elements over fluorite--'ED' elements.

"...However, fluorite easily cracks and is sensitive to temperature changes that can adversely affect focusing by altering the lens' refractive index. So Nikon designers and engineers put their heads together and came up with ED glass, which offers all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of calcium fluorite-based glass."

Even after the Bing cashback, the price seems to be too steep. Plus, I am more for a lighter setup nowadays as we all grow older. So, my f/4.0 IS version will still be my favorite lens covering the same range. Your mileage not only may, but I am convinced, will vary though.

Wow... that's way better than my 70-200 IS MKI. I'm interested in upgrading but will probably wait a while. Like the 100 2.8 Macro at its initial launch, I assume cheaper prices are to come.

Yes, they were pretty close to MFD, that is why the DOF is so thin.... I should have picked another subject but it was getting dark and nothing much to take at work.

Were those shot at MFD? looks like Canon has fixed the softness there.

Thanks for sharing.

Sounds good.. .an unboxing forum.

MSC wrote:
The unboxing thing is all over (cell phones, PDAs, PCs, the list is endless), and often in a lot more detail. Sometime a full length feature video showing untaping, the packaging, excitment building...it would seem those of us that don't understand it are behind the curve. It is harmless enough and some enjoy it, why not...and with so many boxes to unpack, we may need a new sub-forum for each of the gear forums.

Doesn't anyone use the hood? I was hoping to see what the new hood looked like as there are no photos of it. Not even on the Canon site.
