It may have been talked about earlier and I just don't recall (an increasingly common occurrence) but the sample variation is pretty significant. While Sample 1 is quite decent with a 1.4X, Sample 2 is pretty shaky from an IQ perspective and my 300 F4 is feeling a little better about herself.
Got mine today and tried it on my MKIV. This is inside my gun safe, hand held ambient light shot RAW, no sharpening or noise removal only resizing in CS4.
I got a 1.4x extender today and have been playing a bit with it and the 70-200 MkII. I'll post some samples later but I'll comment on the auto focus first.
On a 7D it degrades the speed of the auto focus and unless you set the minimum focusing distance to 2.5 m it hunts a lot. On a 5D Mk II it is harder to say as the auto focus system sucks without the help of the extender. Against static targets (single focus) it is certainly slower but in the servo mode it's difficult to tell where the camera is at fault and how much the extender helps it.
Edit: One thing more. The 70-200 f/2.8 is heavy but I've felt so far that it is well balanced and not too heavy. When I add the extender I feel that some limit has been crossed and the lens becomes simply too heavy and too long to be comfortable to use for a longer period of time. Strange really as the extender doesn't weigh all that much..

I just aquired the 70-200 2.8 IS Mk II this week. This lens is just phenom to say the least. If you wish to check my Zenfolio, all the images are done with this lens and the 1DS MK III.

Bullets I sold most of them a few years ago when I got my MKIIN and 300 2.8 but I still have around 5 or 6 handguns in there
OK, OK, we get your point. Between 5 or 6 guns, the dog, and storing your stuff in a safe, nobody from here is coming your way to steal your stuff. Probably have the front steps mined.
