Peter, what body are you using with the 50? I just got my 7D back from Canon where they graciously replaced nearly all of the electronics (urghhhhhhh!) and shot flowers with the 85L with it yesterday. It has been a number of years since I shot with a cropper but I was amazed at the difference in DOF and the smoothness of the OOF areas between it and the 1DsMkIII. Of course I knew that there would be a difference but I was surprised as to the degree. The 7D was really pretty harsh looking in comparison - not that one couldn't get a good shot with it but the loss of "effect" was more than enough to convince me to stop thinking about trading the 1Ds for a Mk IV.
Henry, I tend to use 40D and 1DsMkII with smaller lenses like 50mm.
I agree that FF (1DsMkII in my case) seems to give me nicer looking files.
However, I am also happy with the IQ my 1DMkIIN gives me.........here is one non-flower shot from yesterday which reaffirmed my faith in the combo 1DMkIIN + 200 f/2 IS. Again, shot as JPG only, hardly any pp.
Perhaps I am just easy to please.
I suspect "easy to please" is not something you are. I see big advantages to cropped formats for lots of different reasons... just not in flower shooting of this style. The reason I asked was I was wondering what the 50L with tubes would look like wide open on a FF on similar shots.

If I had the tubes, I'd try to do a test for you. However, 50 f/1.0 wide open is difficult to handle even at its normal focusing distances. It also often responds to OoF highlights and grid patterns in harsh or unexpected ways which many people find objectionable. Yet, a major part of the fun in shooting with the lens is unexpected results I get in about 1/3 of all shots. Sometimes they are OK, sometimes not so.
