Henry, I tend to use 40D and 1DsMkII with smaller lenses like 50mm.
I agree that FF (1DsMkII in my case) seems to give me nicer looking files.
However, I am also happy with the IQ my 1DMkIIN gives me.........here is one non-flower shot from yesterday which reaffirmed my faith in the combo 1DMkIIN + 200 f/2 IS. Again, shot as JPG only, hardly any pp.
Perhaps I am just easy to please.
