Uh, I'm curious exactly *which* such characteristics they're after. Is the 35/2 not as sharp? Inferior color rendition? Slow focus? Does the third of a stop really matter?
"They prefer the characteristics of the 1.8" isn't really an answer at all.
Yes I removed it all together and discovered that it doesn't do anything at all. The lens is the way it is. Now that there's a 24/1.4 I'd get that if you're shooting on FX.
Sorry- I'm still new to Nikon...are you saying you can put a DX lens on a D700 and override the automatic cropping down to 5mp, or whatever it crops down to?
This 35mm looks like a gem, but I wouldn't want to give up the 12mp. A little vignetting is not going to kill me, so I don't mind that at all!
I'm reluctant to recommend this lens for someone who would intend to use it primarily on an FX body. At focal distances beyond 6' (or maybe 8'), it vignettes badly, requiring a crop down to nearly the FOV of a 50mm lens. Workable in a pinch, but not a combo I'd plan to use regularly.
I was wanting something faster than f2.8 and wider than 50mm. I tried Nikons 35mm f2 and 35m f1.8G, and the Sigma 30mm f1.4 on my D300. After shooting daily for a week, I would rank them as (1) Sigma 30mm f1.4, (2) Nikon 35mm f1.8G (3) Nikon 35mm f2. The Sigma was very clearly the best lens of the three, and not just because it was faster. It's also sharper wide open, has better bokeh, and overall image quality was better (e.g. better color.) The 35mm G had much more CA than I expected from a modern lens, and for me that's definitely a deal killer. Not a totally fair comparision since the 35G is a consumer grade lens and the Sigma is a pro lens, but still for just a little more money I got a noticeably better performing lens. I would not use either the Sigma 30mm or Nikon 35mm G on FX because I often do need the edge to edge sharpness. Some of my buyers look for that and it gives me an edge (pun alert!) over those who can't provide it.
-->It makes no sense at all to me to pay for an FX camera and then shoot it in crop mode. What's the point?
