I had only one hour of sunlight this evening after work, but 50L@f2 (yes I still have it ) servo mode outer focusing points, there was a HUGE difference with my 1Ds3 in AF consistency. There was also absolutely no hunting.
Of course the camera came with clock reset, all CFs reset, and what's worse handstrap removed. Now for those of you who use the handstrap, you know how much fun it's to install...
My 50L also required a different MA - from +5 to +2.
That is good news Stan.
Yeah had to reset the clock and restore custom functions from disk.
Thank goodness I hadn't transferred my handstrap from my 1d2 to my 1d3 like I planned to yet
I did have a brain fart and sent mine in with the battery and eyecup, but all came back.

Stan, what about this:
"With the new FW 1.2.5, the joystick try's to achieve focus when pressed again , this was fixed in the last version of FW 1.2.3, now its back again in 1.2.5, when you tap your Joystick to switch from lets say "single" focus point to "ALL" focus point, the lens try's to activate AF. this sucked in previous older versions of FW "they fixed it", guess what?... now its back to focusing when the joystick is pressed."
Anything positive about the 50L coming from you is indeed a miracle Stan!
Any other improvements you are seeing with the 50L? (without getting into the painful specifics!)
Man, my 1DMKIII is off to Canon on Monday after I shoot with it this weekend.
I gotta say, this is the first time ever that I feel like I can't wait to send something to Canon. !

You see, Stan, perhaps your 50 f/1.2 is stellar (lunar ?) after all. What if your 1DsMkIII had been the cause of the problem all along ?
You may yet decide to keep the lens.........I sense a newly found love in the making here.

You experienced that as well?
Well, I have the back dial set to switch focusing points, and not the joystick (I hate that thing, I am much faster with the dial - esp. in vertical mode ). When I press the joystick the focus point jumps to the center, and also triggers focus. Whether it always triggered focus I don't know, the way it is doesn't disturb me, as long as it jumps to center.

I used the 50L because that's the last lens that I used in San Diego a week ago before sending the camera in. The focus was all over the place in bright sunlight (and 90F). So I did a MA adjustment and headed out, trying to keep up with my 1yo. The camera / lens did better than ever before.
My problems with the 50L have nothing to do with focus accuracy or speed. It has to do with the "look" of the images, and that's independent of which camera I use or if I shoot MF or tripod with LV or whatever. It's a look I can't embrace, and a more accurate AF won't fix that.
Since I am already explaining myself: For anyone claiming that the 50L doesn't have a focus shift problem, try this (with a LV capable camera): put it on a tripod, turn on LV, select AV 2.0, and focus on something 4 ft away while pressing down the DOF button on the camera (that way you actually see the image the way it would be imaged). Then release the DOF button, and boom, we're suddenly at f1.2 (because normally the LV is fed wide open) and focused more in front. Conversely, hold the DOF button and twiddle the aperture to say f2.8 and now we're focused more in the back. At no time did we actually change the focus distance of the lens.
This is so much fun to do I could hardly stop myself holding the DOF button and twiddling the aperture dial!
And again, the focus shift is not the reason why I dislike the 50L. It's the dreamy look at MFD close to wide open.

I wanted to check MA on two primes I received yesterday, and figured I would see if the three shorter ones I already had registered needed adjustments.
1) My mkIII still had the MA settings for my 50/1.4, 100/2 and 135/2L.
2) The 50/1.4 and 100/2 seemed to need an additional +1, the 135/2L was dead on.
I haven't checked my 300/2.8L or 400/5.6L.
I found this interesting, because my other CF's had been reset (back button focus, tracking speed, etc.)

They may be "off" because they will be the same. MAs are stored on the card. So if a lens used to need +10 it may now need a different value, due to service, but the camera will still remember +10.
I always re-load my settings after a service visit, and re-do MA. The custom functions always get screwed up and I am tired of doing everything manually / from memory, as usually I fail to catch everything.
Yep, and one good reason to pop a CF or SD card in the camera and save your settings before putting it in the box. I'll agree it's wayyy too hard to remember all the stuff I've changed from the factory-shipped defaults.

I wish that were true for me. I have changed every setting on my MKIII so many times I have the menu and my personal settings completely memorized. I just sent mine in hoping it might match my MKIIn's servo focus accuracy when it returns. Wishful thinking I'm sure, but there's always hope. If it is no better then it will be the secondary outdoor action shooting camera just as it was last summer. Sadly the MKIIn is still the most solid outdoor action camera in Canon's lineup. The original 1D MKII is 5 years old now.

I'm waiting for RG's report on this. I guess it won't be out for at least a month or so.
A month? Dream on.
Maybe he'll start leaking hints that another test has been done in a month, but this has the potential to drive traffic for 3-6 months if he drags his feet like last time.

Mine came back with all my custom functions intact.
