p.12 #1 · Mark III-Recall again ?

Clearly, regardless of the issues that exist for this camera, there is a perception that it might be damaged goods and this lowers the resale value.

Yes with this camera you could never be 100% sure a camera was being sold SH, because of AF issues, even if minor. I guess if Gene say, or some one like that sold theirs you'd be pretty safe.

Sure, though if this fix seems to work then that should help the reputation.

Tell ya that played into my decision to sell/switch too. Even if fixed the buyer would always be looking for a deal on this body. Just like LP siding years ago, if you were selling the house the buyer would hit you hard "because it has LP" even if it passed inspection and has been properly installed and maintained. It just had a stigma

Well my opinion is I like this camera enough that I'll own it long enough that even if its value weren't depressed, by then it wouldn't be worth selling. I am more concerned about how well my camera performs rather than its resale value

Q: How much does it cost for Canon to do a cleaning?
A: $4k (substitute $6k for a 1Ds)

Cheers

For those who sent their MKIII in, did you remove the battery completely before shipping it off?

I didn't this time, I usually do, especially if I have to pay the shipping . The form you send lists the attachments you send with the camera. I put down eyepiece cup and battery,

You do not need to though.

Figured I better get it checked. Dropped it off today with Canon Mississauga. They ask you remove the battery, memory cards.
We shall see.

Called Canon support and was informed NOT to include the battery or strap. When I asked she replied emphatically "NO! Do not include anything the with camera that can get lost--including the battery, strap or memory card".

I'd save your settings to a card before sending as well.

p.12 #10 · Mark III-Recall again ?

To me the MKIII issue is plain and simple. It gets about 70% as many in-focus action shots in ai-servo vs. the MKIIn. The image quality is amazing, along with the low light focus and high-iso performance. I have gotten some of my best images with this camera in '08. It is a valuable tool for me that I use within its limitations. I own 2 MKIIn's, 2 5D's, and 1 MKIII. I think if Canon had just put everything new into this camera, and kept the old MKIIn autofocus they would have had a super fantastic camera that nobody would have complained about. Oh well, water under the bridge now.

I am sending it in to see if the autofocus will improve. If not, then I will continue on as I have been. I find many instances where I grab for the MKIII first these days so I don't think it's a dog piece of gear by any means.

If Nikon is kicking butt with all their new stuff then I'll just have to suffer with my second-rate Canon gear. I just have to wonder if everything is so much better with Nikon. The end result is being able to produce the images for whatever you are shooting. I am able to do that indoors or out with the R/C stuff I work with so I'm sticking with what I have and know.

It does seem to me - though this is entirely anecdotal - that there are far fewer complaints from Nikon users (at the moment at least) on the general purpose photog boards I follow (& grumblings - especially of the "I'm switching to Canon" kind seem much less evident when I do peruse the Nikon forums). I'm not sure how much stock to place in this kind of thing but it does make you wonder... FWIW, I'm happy with my Canon gear (& still feel the limitations are overwhelmingly user driven rather than equipment related) so I have no intention of changing OS.

Hell, up to about a year and 1/2 ago I was making excellent wildlife shots with my 6MP 10D - just not action and t was very frustratingly slow. I think they stood up to images produced by the then tops 1D Mark IIN for wildlife. I am quite happy with my mark IIN and Mark III combo and I expect will be producing fine photos with them 5 years from now. I can do with trailing edge stable technology,

FWIW, and as I stated earlier, I feel very comfortable using my MKIII--performance has been excellent so far but I've got to admit the new statement from Canon has got me a bit paranoid. And so with that as my only motive the camera is getting sent to VA in the AM, hopefully it will perform as good or better upon its return...hopefully.

p.12 #14 · Mark III-Recall again ?

Hi fellow 1d Mark III owners,
I too spoke with Canon today before sending out my June '07 purchased 1d Mark III, serial #5232**, and they asked that I not send in the battery, CF/SD cards, shoulder strap and eyepiece. I asked about the battery compartment cover, that is fine, as well as the lens mount cover, obviously. If you can't find/don't have a battery compartment cover, place your camera in a plastic ziplock type bag. I asked about needing extra insurance if I used the Canon pre-paid label, the rep Joe said that the camera was insured by Canon as soon as I gave it to the UPS folks. I asked Joe if I could send it next day air, paying it myself, so it might speed up the process, especially since I am in California. He said that was cool, so I just sent out my 1d Mark III by overnight Fed Ex with morning delivery, with insurance of $4,500.00, it cost me $89.00, but hopefully will be worth it if the new fix really, FINALLY WORKS, ALL THE TIME!
I too have had issues using my surrounding AF points, even mentioning it last time I drove down to Irvine almost a year ago to have everything calibrated together, but still have had funky, soft focus photo's some of the time, which sucks when a whole sequence is blurry and you do not know until you're seeing the photo's on your computer, since you can not really judge very accurately how sharp the focus is with the 1d Mark III's LCD screen...

Hi again 1d Mark III owners,
I forgot to ask Canon if they are going to extend the warranty again, such as giving us an extra year warranty from the date of the S/M fix. That would be appreciated by me, at least. So I called Canon again a moment ago, the rep Kevin said the 1d Mark III camera will have another 6 month warranty on the whole camera after the AF fix...

I would think you should be happy with your Canon gear, from your profile you don't own a 1D3, thus never had to put up with spending $4500.00 for camera body that had major troubles.

Well, that was precisely the point - though I've certainly had my share of unwarranted gear problems. But, as your profile suggests you're a Nikon user, I'm not sure why you are concerned...?

If I save all settings will that include MA adjustments?

EDIT: NVM, I found it...seems they will indeed be saved.

b/c he used to be a Canon shooter, and owned tons of high end Canon gears, including the mark III, so he knows what he's talking about

cheers
