p.2 #1 · Mark III-Recall again ?

Alistair Watson wrote:
Yakim, sure mine works but I still get a huge amount of wasted frames when shooting bursts, frames that should be in focus in my opinion.

Anyway, a failed shutter and damaged sensor in my old and last 1D2N which is uneconomical to repair caused me to look for a new second body, which needs to be a 1D series. I don't really want another 1D3 as I never trusted it like my 1D2Ns, though it does have many advantages. There is no sign of a 1D4 and even if there were I would be loathe to be first

Yeah Canon must be desperately trying to avoid selling any cameras in the UK right now. Persistant QC problem rumours and horrendous price gouging... gg Canon.

Doesn't really affect me, being at the used and consumer end of the market as I am but if I were a pro or wealthy amateur I'd be all over Nikon.

Alistair, I decided to follow your footsteps. Well, sort of. I have 40D and many Canon lenses and up to now I was wondering if my second body will be 1D Mk III (stay in Canon) or D700 (run both system). Now I have decided.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Sweet.........a dedicated manual for MkIII AF Servo function.
Hold on, where is the One shot AF manual ?

........

New Canon press release dated 03/03/09:

Canon announced today a new AF manual for ALL Canon EOS cameras manufactured within the last 4 years. Instructions are as follows:

1) use center point AF only (in bright light with lots of contrast)
2) when 1 (above) fails, use manual focus

We sincerely apologize for making customers read lengthy manuals in the past. We at canon are pleased to help our customers get the most from our products.

My 1DsMkIII was going in tomorrow to correct for a tilted viewfinder before the warranty ran out and to get Canon to clean the prism area where they emptied their Hoover prior to selling it to me. It was also going to include a note to check the AF as focus accuracy seemed to be deteriorating badly. The very erratic nature of the problem convinced me that it was my fault but now I am feeling a little better about my ability to properly press the focus button.

All production models? Is there another notice referencing certain serial number ranges or something?

You'll love your shiny new/2nd hand D700. Amazing IQ and reliable pro-grade AF.

It is ironic that their new AF servo manual uses an image of the EF 300 f/2.8 non-IS when they talk about AF points with lenses faster than f/4. The very lens which is on Canon's "do not touch" service list.
Corporate sloppines is like that......it permeates every aspect of company operation, from camera design, to equipment quality control, public announcements, equipment servicing and documentation.

Called customer service. They are e-mailing a UPS shipping label. Bubble wrap it with no accessories and send it in. Should be 2 weeks. I haven't noticed any problems and I really hope they don't screw it up.

Scary, huh?

I'm sorely tempted to send mine in just for the AF check-up, but I have to wonder what I'll get back...

Wow that is interesting. Having switched about 5 months ago to Nikon after struggling with 4 Mk3 bodies I have never been more happy. Right out of the box and very little experience with the body my shots were as crisp as when I shot with the Mk2's. I was very sad to leave Canon because in all the years I did shot with them I never had so much as a hiccup. But in the same breath I was never so mad as them saying it was me not the camera and I just need to learn how to use it. I really hope this is the magic arrow and it makes the Mk3 be what it should have been. Competition makes better products and Nikon felt the pressure and stepped up with the D3,300,7003x. I am sure Canon will get their act together and make a great next body but I tell ya they lost a devoted customer now. It would take an equally huge blunder by Nikon and deny it is going on to get me move.

Best of luck with this and hope it works!

No company is immune. Those who think that jumping to Nikon will eliminate QC issues might read Thom Hogan's "Review Do-Over" from Jan. 26, about a month after the D3x started shipping, IIRC:

"I've already heard from more people with problems with their D3x than I heard from people with D3 problems the first month it was out. Considering that the number of D3x bodies that have shipped is considerably lower than the number of D3 bodies that shipped in the same time period, this isn't a good sign. Let's hope that my experience and that of others I've heard from are a short-term anomaly or just a result of the higher price producing more complaints."

http://www.bythom.com/2009%20Nikon%20News.htm

Again, Thom's expressing concern about QC for the D3x, not the D3, so those who have bought the latter probably aren't seeing problems.

Hmm. I also found this, from diglloyd, on Nikon's new PC-E lenses:

"There is a serious problem with the 45mm and 85mm offerings. Whether it’s a design flaw, or simply the worst assembly tolerances I’ve ever seen is something Nikon will have to answer."

http://diglloyd.com/diglloyd/2009-02-blog.html#_20090204NikonPCE

Reason for edit: Added diglloyd reference.
