Does the AlienBees speedring work with the Elinchrom Deep Octa? If not, is there an adaptor?

Thanks!

No, and there is no adaptor availible. It's doable but you'd have to tinker (or get someone to do it).
All it takes is to dismantle (Phillips screws) the Elinchrom speedring (lots of small parts inside shouldn't discourage you ;-) and replace the original insert by AB's speedring insert.

Not at the moment. If you're handy with tools, you could probably hack together an adapter. There was a rumor about PCB offering an Elinchrom adapter, but I wouldn't depend on it too much.

Bummer... Thanks for breaking my heart, guys. ;-) But thanks for offering hope, too! If I get the DO I may tinker with the speedring.

If you are going to spend the money on such a nice modifier it might be worth it to go ahead and get a better light like the 600RX or 600S. Of course I shoot with AB and love them, but I use Photoflex modifiers

A $350 modifier isn't a terribly compelling excuse to switch IMO. If you wanted to use The Octa, on the other hand...

The irony is that The Octa will accept an AB light. Underpowered for sure, but it would fit all the same.

So..... maybe this will work? Pricey little piece of metal.

uh oh, I got bad news for you guys...I looked into modifying the deep throat to my Hensels, and found that the current deep octa's that are sold (including the one I received 2 months ago) are now riveted together.....no more phillips screws.

Also, I do believe the diameter of the inserts is different, or something else weird like that.

I started a thread over on POTN a while back in my quest to switch mine over to hensel, and it turned out to be relatively undoable (aside from a trip to a machine shop)

for some reason potn isn't opening right now, but once it's back up I'll post the link to that thread and more answers will be available.

This is for THE Octa, the 74" Octa. It doesn't use a speedring as the Octa is mounted straight to the stand, and then the light mounted to the Octa. This would only work for one modifer that Elinchrom makes.

PCB said some months ago, that he'd add an Elinchrom adaptor to his project list. That list is kinda long at the moment though. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll get any advanced news on when it's close now... Whenever it's done, it will simply appear in their web store.

PS Has anyone used the linked adaptor? I'm trying to visualise how it could work without the Elinchrom mount ring blocking the path of the light.

I emailed PCB 2 days ago, asking if they would be making adapters for other modifiers and got this response yesterday:

We will not be supplying adaptor speedrings for other units, boxes or
modifiers.

Just let us know if we can help you with anything else.

Here's the thread I mentioned earlier over on POTN (sorry for cross-linking forums, but lots of good info there) that I started when I attempted to make the deep octa work on my hensels.

As you will read, in the end, I gave up and made the switch to Elinchrom lights.....and to tell you the truth, I couldn't be happier. The lights (600RX), coupled with the skyport rx's (+ skyport rx usb) are better than I ever imagined.

Hope this helps you figure it all out! Good luck.

****** UPDATE*********

Jerry Kacey (kaceyenterprises.com) makes an Elinchrom adapter that will allow you to use Elinchrom modifiers with Alien Bees strobes. Check his site. Jerry Kacey called me about my order to confirm how I'd be using the adapter to ensure I got exactly what I needed, which I thought was nice. So I'm impressed with the customer service already.

They also make an adapter for the Mola 22" beauty dish, even a grid, so you can use it on the Alien Bees strobes, too.

I just ordered the adapter from them (and a Elinchrom Deep Octa from B&H). I will report my results and post pics once I get everything. I'll be shooting with an AB800 in a small studio space so I know I will have enough power to do what I want to do.

This dish is plastic right? Will it work with strobes with modeling lamps on?

The dish is plastic, but it's VERY durable. There's a warning sticker that says that prolonged use with a modeling lamp will damage the product. This is geared mainly towards the acrylic reflector. From what I know, prolonged use with a modeling lamp will eventually discolor the acrylic. Kacey sells an extra replacement reflector that's made from a different material that makes it safe to use with modeling lamps.

I don't know about the Kacey dish. I was interested in eventually getting the Mola, but for now I'm going for the Deep Octa by Elinchrom. I'm just glad to find adapters--it opens up a nice range of modifiers for us Bee users!

Beverly, don't count out the Beauty Dish. It's the same shape as the Mola equivalent and a lot cheaper (just make sure you get the extra reflector. Also, you'll appreciate the difference in weight
