Post processing. It helps if you already know you want a white-ish background, then you can let the light spill onto the background to make post a little easier. It was all done in lightroom with combinations of exposure, contrast, brightness, vignetting, and the local adjustment brush (set to exposure).

- Shout out to Shatterkiss for inspiration on this one.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! Nice pics!! I'd love to see comparison pics of shots taken with the plastic BD beside ones taken with a Mola or even a Buff. I don't know anyone who has all of them, but it'd be great to see!

Really nice stuff. How did you get your BG that white?
RE: white background... I started a thread a while back documenting my quest to shoot full body on white. I just updated it, having finally found a great formula for myself and my studio space.
Thanks for posting it as shot...any other PP is it this SOC? Looks great...partway between a BD and softbox as expected.
I actually like seeing shots for comparing modifiers straight out of the camera because things change so much after you run a few photoshop filters on stuff...
What did the setup end up costing you? $300 for the DO and $50 for the adapter?
How well do you think the AB800 holds the DO when you angle it down slightly? Any worries about the fingers not being able to hang onto the weight of the DO?
And can we have a pic of what the DO looks like mounted on the AB800?

Slight contrast adjustment in ACR, her shirt was a little too bright at the strap area. Defnitely somewhere between a BD and SB. I do like it, but I also love my BD with grid. For part of the shoot I used the latter and key and the DO for fill.
DO was $255, and I got the Kacey Bracket/Elinchrom mount($59) and the Kacey AB/WL mount adapter ($21) assembled together by Kacey.
The AB800 has no problem holding the DO, it's very light actually. The Buff giant softbox is heavier (I tried that and returned it, it was as tall as me). It's very tricky to see how to get it on there though. Kacey suggested I hook the DO to the adapter then put it on the light. I have to lay my light down and rest the DO on top and get down on the floor and look around the attachment to make sure I've got all 4 fingers securing it. Also, assembling the DO was a nightmare. My husband helped towards the end as I simply could not get more than 3 spines locked, and I'm pretty strong for a short female. I'll take a pic and post this week. I'm thinking I'd like the DO on my C-stand, though it's fine on a regular light stand.

Contrary to popular opinion, the DO is actually a pretty light modifier. Elinchrom makes good stuff.
Yes the DO is light. I have to say I was concerned about some reviews I read on the DO on fm, people were saying the spines broke while still under warranty, and the silver was peeling after 2 weeks! When I received it I was shocked how flimsy it felt; don't know what I expected it to be though. The assembly was so horrific I nearly wept. lol I read where one fm'er (a guy) after setting his up said, "I decided I am a girlie man". I felt better reading that. I thought surely there had to be a better way to design this thing? I haven't collapsed it yet but my husband said it's easier after the first time. After I recover from my PTSD with the setup I'll check that out.

While the DO is certainly light, and the fabric they use is certainly different from other manufacturers fabrics, I can assure the build quality is pretty darn good. I worried about the build quality when I first got mine as well (worried I'd puncture the fabric with the rods on first insertion!), but since then I've used mine heavily on location since then, and my rotaluxes are working wonderfully. No worries whatsoever about a broken spine.
As for breaking it down, my wife (who's all of 110 lbs) also struggles with collapsing it. The thing you need to remember is to put most of your force into making the rod parallel to the insertion hole (so it can slide in/out easier) rather than trying to tug outwards on it. After the first couple times it loosens up just a bit too.
Maybe it's just me, but I can setup my EL Octa faster than the 53'' Midi or DO. But the best I've found as far as assembly is PCB's folding softboxes, those things are a dream to snap out. But the Rotalux's fold up nice and small.
Here's some very quick shots of the AB800 with the 39" Deep Octa. My studio is 12' wide; ceiling is 9'6" ...so I would have certain limitations shooting tall persons. I'd prefer the DO on a C-stand or boom (not shown).
Didn't have a model, so the pumpkin and stool are here to show proportions better.
Don't ask why I STILL have a pumpkin in my studio, ok? thnx :-) http://www.beverlyguhl.com/FM/DeepOcta/setup.jpg
Wow...that was more detail than I expected. Thanks, Beverly.
So what's that orange squash doing in your studio?
Is f/11 with the B800 at full power? Looks like 3' away? What's the max useful range of the DO before it becomes too much like an umbrella instead of a DO? Is it still the 1.5 diameter softlighter rule (wondering mainly to see what fstop you'll get w/ the B800 at that range)?
This shot nicely exhibits the DO's signature fall off with it's soft pooled light.
It's good to know it can be modified to fit other lights besides just Eli and PF, as it definitely merits a broader following.
Thanks for the update Beverly.
Ha,
Stumbled on this thread Beverly.
Glad I could help and the lighting looks great.......
People are now having me mate the same adapter with all the major brand inserts. It's not just limited to AB

Hey! Glad you found this thread, and glad to hear your adapters will fit other brands! I'll send you some pics shot with the octa. Thanks for making this adapter and making it such a quality product. (I probably sound like a salesman for your company, but, no, I'm just a fan!)
