Samuli,

I spent a week with one on my 1Ds2 and never saw any of the bokeh CA you're referring to. Lens was very sharp starting WO, very well CA-corrected, good bokeh, realistic color, nice clarity, solid construction, same fast-pitch focus as 80-200. Essentially think of a wider 80-200 from what I've seen. Oh, front element does rotate.

When I think of that lens as Leica's starter 'kit' glass vs the typical EoS L zoom or Nikon/Canon 'kit' glass I can't help but laugh.

I hear you on sales. With SHPhoto out of Germany (among others) offering new R stock at 1/2 list... Decent used price would be $500ish

Those prices are great, and I may pick up a 80-200 from them if there are still any left when I find myself with some extra spending money.

The 35-70/4 is a great lens from wide open. In the end, I preferred the more intense contrast of the Contax 35-70, and the f/3.4 helps with focusing, so I sold the Leica 35-70/4, but I dearly miss it. I remember always being very pleased with the colours and 'plasticity' of the images it produced. The build quality, just like the 80-200, is superb.

Steven - I recall seeing many of your 35-70/4 shots - they convinced me to want to try the lens.

Hi,

After using this lens without snow in the ground I would like to give update regarding the magenta spot issue:
- during normal daylight hours I cannot create the magenta spot
- after or before sunset when white balance of 10000-20000K would give "correct" gray this still happens

So in practice this is not a big problem, unless doing winter photography.

Few recent photos with 5DmkII:
135mm f/4 [HDR made from 3 images]

80mm f/5.6 [handhold!!!]

135mm f/8

200mm f/4

Here's a shot from this weekend with the Mamiya 200/2.8 APO: I think it does really well myself and compares favorably with the Leica 180/3.4 APO but at a cheaper price and with good close up performance.

The shots nothing fancy, just my kid screwing around with a soccer ball.

After some reading on this site I was interested in this lens and searched more information about it. Pebbleplace.com has some nice pictures from it (MF).

Well, I won one yesterday at ebay and I can not wait to see how it will turnout on my 5D.

Nice catch BTW !

James, that's a cool shot, especially for manual focus. It definitely has that 3D nature.

James - nice shot with the 200 APO. Your 5D or 40D?
One of my fave lenses. Does great work with an extender as well.
