Bloody hell. That's more money gone. SLII's are at the must-buy point for me.

And it's small enough to make a good normal on the G1 too, probably a better performer than the underwhelming ZD 25/2.8

mawz,

Suddenly you understand where I'm coming from when I bought the 16-35 ZA.

So Stephen Gandy is taking reservations. I just sent in $100 to reserve one out of the first batch.

I'm just glad you started drinking the Zeiss kool-ade ;-) But there's still 2 more ZA's you need

While I can understand the appeal of using this on both Nikon dSLRs and the G1, I hardly ever go wider than 28mm or longer than 90mm (on full frame). The range of the G1's 14-45mm kit lens is perfect for me, but it's way too slow. So, as much as I like my 40mm & 58mm SL II's, I'm hanging out to see how the Panasonic 20/1.7 performs and what Olympus is bringing to the mFT party before I commit to the G1.

Admittedly you'd be using the Color Skopar's sweet spot on the G1 but you'd be sacrificing auto-focus plus two full stops that the 20/1.7 provides. I'm not sure that's the kind of trade I'd want to make.

And by sweet spot you mean over resolving the very center of the lens.

nice..... I think this is one lens that just might be worthwhile to get - if the performance is anything close to the 40mm and 58mm.

The G1's currently my only digital and I purchased it with adapting lenses in mind. But I'm primarily a Nikon shooter (on film) so the lens being well suited to the G1's a side benefit, getting the Color Skopar is mostly about replacing my 20/2.8 AF which I'm not fond of as a MF lens.

Ah, my bad. I think I mistook you for another member who uses SL II's on a D40 or a D60. I have a 20/2.8 AF which I bought mainly to use as a ~28mm equivalent on a D300. I wouldn't want to use it as a MF lens either.

Odds on that the Color Skopar will be a first-rate MF replacement. I suspect a lot of us will be interested in seeing how it performs.

Actually, I did use a D40 for a while, I got rid of it in January when I got my G1. But the Color Skopar's better suited for that use as well since there's no AF on a D40 or D60 with the 20/2.8 AF. The 20/2.8 was nice on the D300 though (I've also recently become an ex-D300 user)

I'm interested, but it has some tough competition. It will likely be better than the Zuiko 21/3.5 (especially in the far corners) , but the Zuiko 18/3.5 will be tough to beat. If it's better than my excellent copy of the Nikon 20/4, and reasonably priced, then it will get serious consideration.

There isn't a CV lens that isn't reasonably priced. The other two SLII lenses are $379 shipped, so I'd expect this to fall right in line. I am sure this will blow the OM out of the water and it's smaller to boot.

Paul, don't even compare this to the oly 18.... one is dumb, expensive, and esoteric, while the other is small, new, awesome, and F-mount w/ CPU.... oh and cheap.
btw, one is 20, the other is 18. I personally can't live with a 20, i need wider.

and isn't the 20/4 huge and dumb?

I'd hardly call the Oly 18 expensive. All of the actually desirable 18's go for similar prices. in the $600-$1000 range. If you want good and ultra-wide you pay the $$. Note I'm expecting the Color Skopar to be somewhat more expensive than the other two SLII lenses, probably around 50% more, due to the more complex design.

As to the Nikkor 20/4, it's 63.5x47.5mm to the Color Skopar's 63x28.8mm, so its noticeably longer but not actually large. Ironically, the smallest of Nikon's 20's is the f2.8 (the f2.8 AI-S is 65x42.5mm, the f3.5 AI is 63.5x50mm and the old UD f3.5 is the monster of the lot at 75x69.5mm. Nicon measures length from the rear of the lens, not the lens flange, Cosina from the lens Flange, so the Nikkors are a few mm shorter in flange-front projection).

And all these lenses are 'dumb' unless you use CPU lenses on Nikon bodies which can read them, which most of the folks around here don't (including me for the most part, 3 of my 4 Nikon bodies lack electronic coupling and the one that has it doesn't get used a lot) so that aspect is completely irrelevant.

the oly is overvalued, as are most "alt" superwides.

a few years back, i remember the oly 18 going for 600ish quite often, even at KEH.
this new CV is so different from the oly in so many ways, it's not even funny.

I am merely using the Oly 18/3.5 as a benchmark of what a good 20/3.5 should be able to perform. I am well aware of the different FOV between 18 and 20mm.

ISO1600, you apparently have never owned an Oly 18/3.5 (or at least a good copy with a good adapter)? The Oly 18/3.5 is not overpriced. There is no other 18mm lens that's as sharp across the frame on FF. It also has great color and "look". I can bet the CV 20/3.5 will NOT be as good. And it surely won't be have the great build quality of the Nikon 20/4.

How hard is it to find out a little info on the 20/4 It is smaller than a most standard manual focus 50/1.4's
