John Keats, "Odes on a Grecian Urn" using the power of Search Engine

John Power wrote:
Hey, I am the English Literature major here (Univ of Florida 1973). Leaving the quoting to me will ya...Here is what Daan is thinking about Nikon now:

"Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though

Hmm, Canon, Nikon, Canon, Nikon....

What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy

Off topic I guess...but two days ago one of my T90s stopped working...the first Canon to break down on me ever...and I still have two FTb QLs that came from my 60s art school days..and yes, they work perfectly. And everything I have bought in between....I find it hard to part with cameras once I've used them...

I understand that, but considering how many people have a good one first time, there is no question that he has been unlucky, and if he perseveres he will eventually end up with a good one, which I think will still be worth waiting for. I'm not apologising for Canon, but in these situations one just has to persever (or switch to Nikon).

I'd play the lotto if I was him

I have generally been quite pleased with my Canon gear, with only the 17-40L
having significant problems, which indeed were still there after calibration.

But, I'd like to suggest to Daan that he should try to purchase used gear from
great sellers on this board rather than playing the Canon QC lottery.
He has had poor luck with new bodies. Just purchase used bodies in excellent
condition from the best sellers here at FM. That will usually mean that you won't
be using the very newest equipment as soon as it comes out. And this is generally
safer as well.

I'd be frustrated too in Daan's position, but I still like the Canon system quite a lot,
and my solution has worked well for me and saved considerable coin as well.
And let me just say the 24/1.4L mkI that I just got used is a _very_ sweet copy.
And at a fine price. Three cheers for used equipment!

Just a thought.

The only 5D II horror story is the one involving too many threads about the camera.

Anyway... does anyone know when the Mk IV is out?

For John Power: Ode on a Grecian Urn" by Keats. And Peter that's no excuse as I also did that.

When I woke up this morning I realized it is true
Canon actually tried to sell me a 2500,00 camera with a missing part
Maybe some factory worker had a mind boggling flu
Either that, or the 5D2 is just one big fart

I used to work in electronics retail and I can tell you this is nothing new from ANY company. Nikons always came back, Canons always came back, Sonys always came back (way more often then anyone else).

Seriously about 1 out of 7 cameras sold came back with genuine defects.
... <snip>

Well if 1 in 7 comes back, on average, then about 1 in 350 can expect to have 3 bad ones in a row. Sounds unbelievable, but I suppose it's possible

The new Canon service outfit in Switzerland is Sertronics in Spreitenbach and Gland. They also took over Chako in Delemont where I used to get very good service. Apparently Sertronics services for Canon in other countries, so maybe they have experience. They say a repair or lens calibration turn around should be within a week. That would be a lot better than IT Services.

No place I know of in Switzerland has the 5D Mark II yet, do tell your secret source.

IT Services doesn't desserve its name when it comes to services... First time I have to deal with Sertronics, they are supposed to be much better, we'll see.
I bought my camera from Europhoto in Geneva. On thursday they even had one "in stock" (ok, one is not much of a stock...)

Either you have the worst luck in the world or well you have the worse luck in the world.

There has been 10's of thousands of 5d's shipped, a lot of them have come to FM users, SS users, DPR users etc and if there was a big problem with them shipping in a faulty state with parts missing this would not be the first thread about it.

It seems you just got really unlucky. Just make sure your never on the same airplane as me!

Well, if in a few months time the dirty secrets about the 5D2 come out, I might just be very lucky I didn't end up with one

Dearest Daan, my sincerest sympathy. Maybe you caught the full brunt of the economic crisis, in that perhaps the Canon workers are rattled about the future and lost their concentration. In the past I have often wondered how such workers can consistently do that kind of robot-like work day in and day out without making more mistakes than they do. Guess they are human after all. Perhaps you are lucky in that the problems were with a camera and not a car with faulty brakes....

I'm going to miss Chako, they replaced a 5D sensor, checked and calibrated eight lenses all in a four-day turn around. All under warranty and didn't cost me more than the drive there and back. Not sure I expect such from Sertronics, but if they are light years better than IT Services, that's a start. I heard some Chako people went to Sertronics in Gland, so maybe that's a recommendation too.

Europhoto, ha! I like them, bought some Billingham stuff there. I get most of my gear from Heiniger in Niederbipp now, good prices and good service.

I'm pretty sure it's not coming from a "batch" if it was a batch issue it would be exactly the same issue on the different models

There's always been a lot of talk.... Nikon costs more type stuff.

Guess what, Quality Control costs money. I've never had an Olympus or Nikon fail on me. I'm happy with my 1dIIn but I've experienced problems with Canon lenses or flashes or Err99.

I bought the 5DII because the D3x price was out of my league. The only camera I think was inappropriately priced in Nikons range.

Happy so far with the 5 II, but a photography associate I share work with just had the mirror of his 5DII fall out of the camera. He took a picture and heard a noise and rattle, and then a blank view in the viewfinder. Took off the lens and the mirror fell on the floor. He was dumbfounded, but can't get a replacement because there is no stock. I've given him my 1DII to borrow.

It was almost by accident I ended up with some Nikon gear. Now that I have it, I will see what happens with a future D700x model and some anticipated lenses. Maybe I'll cull some gear, like my remaining Canons.

This post has convinced me that Canon really haven't figured it out yet. After the 1D3 fiasco, and by any way you look at it, it was, I can't believe they are putting this kind of quality out the door. Sure you expect the odd glitch here and there but mirror boxes falling out of the camera? Although I've thought about the dark side the 10Gs worth of glass, some with no Nikon equal, will keep me here for the time being. But when its time to replace the 1Ds2??

Could this be the same issue that is identified in the 5D?: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=11933&keycode=2112&id=55659
