I am in the process of liquidating a ton of gear, with the intention of shooting more and simply making the best photos I can with the gear I have already. Hopefully, I'll end up with a few keepers.

You will also keep something between 21 and 58 obviously... Maybe get something new and spectacular in that range? Maybe getting a Z18/3.5 as well...?

You are partially correct.
The 58/1.2, 85/1.2, and V125/2.5 will never be sold. Not as long as I am alive, anyway.
I was seriously tempted by the Zuiko 18/3.5, but only so I could shoot it head-to-head with my Tamron 17 (so I can lay that to rest, finally). Alas, it didn't work out and I am probably better off this way.

I need to thin the gear herd some more too, and shoot more. It's too easy to get seduced by the gear itself.
I did some shooting today, with a summicron 50/2. That's a sweet little lens. A bit flarey when shooting into the light but still a great piece. So well made.
It has a video rectangular hood shaved so it doesn't vignette. It's on my old 40D because I wanted to use the 5D MkII with the Summicron 35mm to take the photo

No, it works fine on the 5D2 without vignetting, I just put it on the 40D for the photo. The hood cap is really good to protect the pronounced front element.
If you're interested this is a 52mm hood and it doesn't need a step-up ring since it has a screw so it can be tighten in the front of the lens. It makes the access to the aperture ring a bit more challenging but nothing to worry about.

Finally got lucky...my Zuiko 18 arrived today and looks to be in pristine shape. Double good news is that the adapter arrived to day as well. Initial test shots are really impressive...will do some 'real' shooting with it this weekend.
The big question is what to do about a hood and/or filters. One suggestion is to use a 49-77 adapter ring, then remove the glass from a cheapie 77mm filter and thread that into the adapter, which would allow use of a protective filter, CPL, etc. I generally do not use UV filters on my lenses unless the situation (blowing dirt/sand, etc) dictates, but this lens will need one just to protect the front element.
Is the above a workable solution with minimal vignetting, or is there a better recommended solution? The above video hood looks interesting and is inexpensive, but the downside for me is the bulkiness. My lens did not come with the OEM 49-72 ring, so I'll need to do something. Thanks for any help.

Mike! I shoot mine either nude or with a 49-58 + 58-77 step ring. I get very slight vignetting when using a pol filter. The two step rings are probably too thick so I might have to mod it to get the filter closer to the lens.

Thanks, Anden. I'll probably go the 49-77 step ring route...I ordered a 49-77 ring and a cheap 77mm slim protector with front threads (only 3mm thick). I'll remove the glass from the protector and see how this combo works out. If it works, I'll superglue the empty ring to the step ring...

keep us posted! I was even considering what it would take to get the 49-77 remade in small quantities, to the oly specs (assuming I could get an original to use as a template). could be pretty doable on a lathe with some aluminum barstock. The threading would be the tricky part... probably more trouble than it's worth though.

You may find the need for a little minor surgery on the 49-77 step-up ring. My recently acquired 18 did not fit my Cokin P-ring, my 49-67, or my newly acquired 49-72 rings. The space bewteen the front threads and the front element is VERY thin.
Half an hour with a half-round file, some 120-grit sandpaper, and a final buff out with steel wool did the trick.
I haven't had a chance to try my Singh-Ray circular pol on the 18 yet - going 49-67 & 67-77. Will try this weekend and report.
Couldn't stand the thought of parting with my old Galen Rowell grad ND for Cokin P - no edges visible through lens, and the Cokin P-filter mount gets you far enough off the front that you don't need step-up.

Here are my first test shots...nothing spectacular (we don't have too many twisted torso buildings in my neck of the woods ), just a few shots of the fence at the back of my pasture. Just to set things up...taken with the 5D, bare lens, no filters, no PP of any kind with the exception of some minor capture sharpening, then converted and re-sized. Even at f/5.6 in the last picture, the corner detail is pretty sharp. This little bugger is pretty impressive...well worth the wait.

Nice shots Mike! Indeed that is a sharp one, no doubt. The best part of the Oly 18 (in addition to the vignetting I suppose) is that it's almost as good at 3.5 as it is everywhere else - very consistent at all apetures. Sure it gets sharper stopped down but it's quite good wide open too.
