Thanks Ulrik! You should take the 18 of André's hands...

What is it you are suggesting, Andreas! Well, I almost broke my 18 the other day. Maybe you are right, I should give it to someone else before offing it completely. Actually I fractured a rib in the process of falling over and landing on my 5d2 with the 18 attached....

Hey Anden...that last shot is pretty awesome...the vignetting really adds to the shot. I'm waiting for some better scenery to do some more shooting with mine...Texas winters aren't very special (at least not where I am ),

Is the 5D2 ok too?

This thing is just amazing. Nothing seems to affect it, snow, rain, 75 kg human beings landing on it. Not a scratch or any issue. You should have seen the camera when I got back up, looked like a snow ball. Also commendable for the 18 to survive that fall. That dome should have been smashed in, but miraculously not...

Thank you guys for the concern
Yes, I am amazed that nothing worse than a broken filter happened to the equipment. It´s the only lens I have a filter on

Finally got lucky...my Zuiko 18 arrived today and looks to be in pristine shape. Double good news is that the adapter arrived to day as well. Initial test shots are really impressive...will do some 'real' shooting with it this weekend.
The big question is what to do about a hood and/or filters. One suggestion is to use a 49-77 adapter ring, then remove the glass from a cheapie 77mm filter and thread that into the adapter, which would allow use of a protective filter, CPL, etc. I generally do not use UV filters on my lenses unless the situation (blowing dirt/sand, etc) dictates, but this lens will need one just to protect the front element.
Is the above a workable solution with minimal vignetting, or is there a better recommended solution? The above video hood looks interesting and is inexpensive, but the downside for me is the bulkiness. My lens did not come with the OEM 49-72 ring, so I'll need to do something. Thanks for any help....Show more →
My Zuiko 18 finally arrived and it comes with a original 49-72 ring. Can I not just get a standard 72mm filter or do I have to get a slim one ? I agree that the front element do need some protection so it is now stay on the shelf until I get a filter for it.

Never mind the camera and the lens....they can come and go.
The person who uses them comes first...and stays for good.
Having said that, glad you are Ok.

You can likely get a normal 72 and use it w/o vignetting I'd think. I don't have one to say for sure, but I don't recall olympus ever mentioning it needed a slim filter. Back in those days, they didn't make the front-threadless type slim filters like they do now. that being said I think many of olympus's filters tended towards the thin side by nature.

That's a nice clean copy. Where did you find it with the original adapter? Get a 72mm lens cap, and leave the adapter on to protect the front element. It will all fit, assembled, inside a Canon hard TC case very nicely (and still very compact). I'd also recommend a black adapter, as the silver ones can cause reflections on the Zuiko 18's. A higher grade adapter may also get you better optical performance.
but then it would not fit in the case. By "Canon hard TC case" do you mean a hard case for the tele converter? I am thinking of getting a 72mm filter to protect the front element also.
Which brand adapter comes in black and is high grade?

I wonder if the throat on the Olympus adapter is thinner that what you typically find on standard adapter rings? Reason I ask is that I have a Lee 49-77 filter holder adapter ring that won't thread easily onto my Oly 18...being afraid to force it, I gave up after several attempts. I'm guessing that the Oly adapter may be thinner to fit into the very narrow gap between the lens element and outer ring. I'm still waiting on a 49-77 ring that I ordered about a week ago.
