I don't have a dog in this fight but I got my almost new EF 50mm F1.4 back from being calibrated at Canon and it had this same issue. They fixed it free without a question. IMHO, Canon knows this lens is very easily damaged and doesn't ship well. Anyone who ships this lens should insure it for the full value.
I also had the misfortune of having that lens fall out of a backpack once. Glass was fine, but the AF wouldn't work and MF was grindy. Sent it to my local canon repair facility and it was fixed for $110. One voucher would cover almost all of your repair. If you know a CPS member, it would cover all the repair and have quick turnaround as well. I wish you the best in getting the lens back to working for you. You'll enjoy it!
PM sent to Karl offering to purchase with the intent of repair and using for my hobby of capturing images of my son's basketball team. If accepted by Karl I would be willing to accept the donation of a repair voucher and could make use of a hood if anyone has one available. Thanks for the great benefits of this site!

I had this happen a few years ago. I sold a Canon 50mm f1.4 to a fellow. He contacted me saying that the lens would not autofocus. Incidentally, I had dealt with this person numerous times with nothing but positive results.
I gave him his money back and he returned the lens to me. When I checked it, it worked fine on my Canon camera but not on a friend's camera. I later sold it locally so I could make sure it worked on the buyer's camera. It worked fine.
I am wondering if it was a problem with one of the contacts. Who knows.

It may work on someone's camera, but the two bodies I tried it on it didn't. And I have had one of these before with no problems ever, go figure! You were kind enough to offer the return, that is what counts. Nice of you.

Karl, I have seen the Canon 50mm 1.4 "stuck" before. Try to clean contact and manual focus a little bit, it may work. My copy is OK (knock on wood) but my friend's copy did not focus before and after a while it magically works again.
As for the seller, he/she should at least let the buyer knows if there is a problem ... this is very irresponsible.
I recently sold a EF 50 f/1.4 to a friend. It worked perfectly on my 5D, but when he received it (very well packaged), it would only focus sporadically on his 30D and 1D2. I'm not sure why, but it was very upsetting to me as the seller. Luckily, we purchased insurance so that the lens could be fixed or replaced in case something happened.
