p.1 #1 · Will used prices drop when Mark IV comes out?

I've got a general question about the price market for used camera bodies.

I currently shoot with a 30D, mainly sports, hockey and soccer and often at night at high ISO. I think the 30D has taken me about as far as it can. I think I'm getting the best images I can produce with my current equipment and am looking for more precise and quicker focus, which, reading this forum, I'm gathering will only get by stepping up to a 1D body.

I'm in the market for a 1D Mark II N, but at about $1500 it's just a little bit out of my price range. My question is, what will prices do when Canon comes out with their latest pro body (which usually occurs in the spring, right?). Is it likely that the II N will drop even more after that?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.

Steve

Would you ever consider the regular MII?

Of course the used prices of older bodies will drop as newer ones are announced. The amount of the drop won't be as great as time goes on. I.e. 1D2 bodies are currently ~1100 or so, -IF- a new 1D4 or whatever is announced, 1D2 body prices will drop a little but don't except drops of 50% (ditto for the 1D2N). 1D3 bodies will drop in price a lot more though.

Underpants,

Yeah, I would consider the regular Mark II vs. the N, but shooting with the 30D I've kind of gotten used to a larger LCD and I like it. I had a 10D so I know what the smaller screen is like. Since I always shoot raw the picture styles the and II N and the 30D have aren't really useful to me.

I've also heard that the II N focuses a little better than the Mark II. Does anybody have an insight on that?

Prices have already dropped significantly on most used cameras due to the economy. Will they drop more when a given camera loses a generation in relation to the newest? Of course they will. But by then how many images will you have lost? Go back and look at the predictions for when the 5D II would be released. It was about a year later than expected/hoped for. You said '...usually occurs in the spring...". Which spring did you mean? If you meant this spring, then you're likely a year too early. But who knows for sure. After all the 5D II rumor threads and groundless speculation I'm not looking forward to a rash of 1D IV rumor threads.

Look at it this way, if you're making money on your photos then chances are you will capture one or two photos with a Mk II or IIN that you couldn't with a 30D and make up the difference in price. If you don't make money and you're taking photos of your kids sports, then you have to decide if it's worth the extra money now. If it's not family or profit and just fun, then decide where you'll get the most enjoyment out of your money and go that way.

But I don't recommend basing it on rumors and guesses about when the Mk IV will come out.

No, the old bodies will achieve cult status and their value will skyrocket on the used market. They will become more expensive than the new model, even though the new model will surpase the old one in every aspect.

Too funny, I guess my 1d2 on it's second shutter will be a gold mine. Start the bidding boys, but don't wait too long. The MkIV launch might launch the price of my 1d2. HA! And if monkeys could fly.........................

As DSLRs reach market saturation and maturity levels, the huge price drops of the past may not hold up as people realize the diminishing returns on buying newer gear. The weak economy is a factor but, like the world stock markets, used gear markets can greatly fluctuate on the whim of demand.

There are pros still using and making money with the now-ancient 1Ds ("Mark I") so what is their inclination to change unless it makes them more money? Some change to be at the forefront of image quality compared to their competition, but the image quality part of the equation is not so great as it once was; the fact that we can even argue about comparing noise levels of iso6400 cameras when, just a few years ago, we couldn't even shoot useable images at iso6400 is a case in point.

The hobbyists were driving the market for several years and that is surely going to slow if it hasn't already (I think it has slowed) and their actions will greatly determine the used gear prices.

Somewhere in my vast store house of knowledge and experience I recall something having to do with "supply and demand" and I also recall something about "herd mentality."

For the life of me I can't recall the connections.

If you don't have the money don't play the game. It just get too frustrating.

Spend your money on good lenses and time in developing (honing) your skills.

Difficult to say, the 1DMKIIn is proving to be one of Canon's BEST ever products. I would not expect a glut of them and with prices on the way up, I'd be surprised if such a remarkable camera drops at all actually.

In the shorter term obviously.

If the 1D IV is a dud Canon is finished in the sports market, Nikon will control the market for a long time.

well, the momentum is certainly on the dark side, which will hopefully force Canon to do a bit better in terms of releasing the product after the bugs have been worked out. I certainly hope they don't just try to reimplement the 1d2 af system though.

If they did, I'm sure they wouldn't describe it as the 1D2 AF. And users would probably notice the difference in slower initial focus lock too. Even RG praised the fast initial lock with the 1D3.

I wonder how many more potential buyers will hold back this time, waiting to see what the early user reports are.

Hope we don't see yet a new set of problems with the 1D4 either. Yikes.

I'm sure many will hold back- especially those inconvenienced previously- if they haven't switched already.

It's hard to believe anyone is speculating on the next Canons when the current range has just hit the market...

Regarding the OP..lusting after the 2N myself this thread interests me as potentially useful info. In my opinion all cameras are over priced gadgets so the question is..what represents best value for money......the 1D 2N is getting a lot of votes in a lot of forums...but in the grand scheme of things..is it much better than say the much cheaper 40D?

Aren't people expecting the next 1D series camera to be announced for PMA in about 7 or 8 weeks? Or not until Photokina in September?

Photokina is only held every two years so if that is venue for the announcement the 1dMK4 will be available in Sept 2010.

Ah yes, thanks for the reminder. Hmmm, I wonder if they'll really wait that long.
