p.3 #1 · Boxes for sale!

I had the original box and manuals when I had my EOS RT, And that helped when I sold it because the buyer was interested because I had the box and the manuals!

I would never buy an used item without a box (and everything in it)

OMG Micheal, I WANT THAT BOX!!!!!!

You people who don't care about the boxes will never understand. There are "blue collar" photographers and "white collar" ones. I happen to be the latter.

And Gochugogi you got burglarized, not robbed.

p.3 #4 · Boxes for sale!

I remember wanting to sell a lens one day. $2200. I got a good deal when I paid $2000, since it was selling for $2300.

At an event. Two photogs there interested in my lens. The first guy says "what's the condition of the box like". I said, "the lens is very sharp and doesn't have any scratches".
He asks again, "what's the box like".
"I threw the box out".
He offers $2100.

I turned to the other bloke and said you can have it for $2050. I can't deal with people like that.

I have a spare 28-300 box. Wonder what I could get for it; it's pretty big

Hmm, I usually throw away all my boxes. Otherwise I'd have a heap of crap a 100 feet high. No shit! So I look like a thief when I sell? You guys probably shouldn't consider a career in law enforcement. You'll have to arrest 99% of the population based on a lack of boxes...

Let's say you see two listing on Craigs list...

Listing #1:
For Sale! Canon 24-70mm 2.8. Used, but in great shape. Item includes box, hood and everything that originally came with it. $800 OBO

Listing #2:
For Sale! Canon 24-70mm 2.8. Used, but in great shape. $800 OBO

So you would not think that there is greater chance that the lens without the box is possibly stolen? I think you would be incredibly naive if you do not suspect anything.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how this has anything to do with future careers in law enforcement? I'm not saything that everyone who sells a lens without a box is a thief. I simply stated that a lens sold with a box is much less likely to be stolen than one without a box. Unless a lens is stolen from a store (much less likely than stolen from a person on the street, or a person's car), it would be difficult for the thief to obtain the box.

Michael.........what about the ubiquitous "blank warranty card" ?
Even if the lens(e) is, say, 12 years old ?

Robbery is when an item is taken directly from the victim by force, violence, assault or putting in fear. Burglary is when another breaks and enters into a structure or conveyance with the intent to commit an offense. That offense is usually theft e.g. his situation.

By the way. I offer no boxes with the product I sell and no-one has ever asked for one

Okay, I'll start saving my boxes. But when selling, I'll offer a great price for the item but charge considerably more if they want the box. Obviously people with box fetishes are willing to pay more and it would be smart to take advantage of their weakness.

In the USA "rob" also mean "To take valuable or desired articles unlawfully from, e.g., rob a warehouse.

I think John would say he has first dibs

I will buy the box for $50 if it is in really good shape. Email me a photo of it. (This is where the rubber meets the road. His response is going to be "sorry, no international sales. Those boxes are as rare as hens teeth*)

Just had to show John the box existed,

I hope you used the 50mm F1.8 to take your box shot. I did.

I agree boxes are important and for sellers try and add a picture of the box (of course not at ISO 25600 and poor lighting like mine above).

From experience a few years ago I listed my old Apple II Plus on that auction site. It sold and was shipped to Japan. What was the biggest selling feature, something I didn't even notice when I took the picture, I had the box in the picture and the highest bidder informed me that the box being included was the most important part of the sale. I had that box for some 20 years.

You don't know what you are talking about. For the rest of the world who cares, our "legal expert" is dead wrong, just so you know. Robbery and burglary are separate and distinct criminal acts with different elements. With robbery there is ALWAYS a taking. With burglary there is not. "Rob" is one of the most misused words in the English language.

Dictionary definitions often derive from common usage, not legal definitions. Makes sense as we hear or read a word and wish to look it up and understand the meaning. Legal definitions by nature are narrow and, outside of law enforcement and lawyers, are not normally part of common usage. My definition of "rob" was quoted from the American Heritage Dictionary.

Just because a word is used as a colloquialism does not make it correct. The word "ain't" is in the dictionary also and is used as a colloquialism but I bet you wouldn't use it in your resume when applying for any job. Why? Because it is incorrect. The warehouse was burglarized. It was not robbed because warehouses are inanimate objects.

Now, back to the boxes.

Language is a like a living thing. It evolves and changes with usage. Old definitions fade and new ones appear. If they stick long enough they become part of the "correct" definition. The word "gay" once referred only to merriment. Now it's mainly a sexual orientation. "Back focus" once referred to a lens design and in recent years morphed into a particular focus problem. Not much you can do about it except save your boxes (so you won't be marked as a "robber" or "burglar") and curse change/cry in your beer...

Well pardon me, but I was sure the Subject line said: Boxes for sale!
Then there was the question: What's with the rash of boxes for sale in the buy & sell forum?
Sounds like a fairly relevant question for posting on the B&S Forum.

I find your desire to "police" the forum a little unnecessary, and your comment on the verge of rude. Let the moderators handle it.

I didn't know that making a suggestion was "policing". Why don't you offer up an explanation as to why boxes for sale has anything to do with Canon-mount SLR's.

Maybe if appropriate subjects were placed in appropriate forums, the moderators would not have as much work to do.
