I will buy the box for $50 if it is in really good shape. Email me a photo of it. (This is where the rubber meets the road. His response is going to be "sorry, no international sales. Those boxes are as rare as hens teeth*)
And no Mic, I am NOT kidding. I will not buy a used lens w/o the box.

* An ancient Canadian saying
The box doesn't photograph well, but sorry John not for sale.

I'm the same way. Having a box is also a very low tech way of making sure the gear isn't stolen. The percentage of lenses stolen in the box must be quite low compared to lenses stolen from camera bags, etc.
Hmm, I usually throw away all my boxes. Otherwise I'd have a heap of crap a 100 feet high. No shit! So I look like a thief when I sell? You guys probably shouldn't consider a career in law enforcement. You'll have to arrest 99% of the population based on a lack of boxes...

I don't think anyone has said that selling a lens without a box is a sign of thievery. What he is saying is that selling a lens with a box is a sign that it isn't thievery.

You are right Ben, a great time to buy stock. As for boxes, I will not buy a lens w/o the box unless it is the 50 1.8 MK1 since those boxes are impossible to find.
I like to buy the lens with box as well, but could you resist a 85mm 1.2L mkII in MINT condition without box for $150 cheaper and from a reputable photographer?

Or that the thief ripped off new gear from a store or warehouse! Or maybe an anal retentive geek with a stash of boxes...
A couple years ago my office was robbed. The thieves cut a hole through the wall and made off with a small truckload of pro audio gear and musical instruments. They went through my file cabinet and took all the manuals and related papers and--amazing--took all the original boxes I had folded and tossed behind the file cabs.

Agreed, the box itself doesn't proof a thing.
The original bill with the name of the buyer is far better proof (although a little creativity can blow up dust in that department as well).
If I want to buy something legit, I'd ask for the original bill, not the box.
Keeping something like the box after the original warranty has expired tells more about the buyer, more concerned with keeping his collection in mint condition than using his gear.
That 50/1.8 mk1 box despite the terrible photo, looks like a mint. When did you buy it?

Wow, dood. That box is beaut. I'd say condition EX+ to LN-. If you decide to sell it, give me a shout. Granted, I may have to buy the lens too that came with it.

Wow! I didn't even know that there were separate boxes for the 50/1.8 Mark I. I had just assumed the 50/1.8 Mark I came with camera kits. Like any other camera equipment I didn't buy new in box, I didn't get the 50/1.8 Mark I in a box. It doesn't matter to me whether there's a box or not as long as the seller is reputable and the equipment is as advertised or better.
A. It is handy if you need to send anything in for repair.
B. You get more second hand prices
C. a place to leave items not needed at that time but new users might need.
D. all kept in the loft and it adds to the insulation
Back to the original question: If you look at the box sales recently, I believe you'll find most are from an online rental house (not mine). With the number of lenses involved keeping the boxes isn't really an option, the cost of storing them would get ridiculous.
I send mine to Canon for calibration once a year, they refresh the foam and I'm assured of passing one along that's sharp wide open...when I go to sell.

Wow...I couldn't imagine there were so many lens(e) and box collectors on this forum. Some of you lads should go out and....you know.
Being a regular kinda amateur photog that I am, this is the only box that makes a difference in my life.
