What's with the rash of boxes for sale in the buy & sell forum? I might start listing all of mine at $15 a pop if there's such a market for them

I guess people are looking to make whatever money they can in a tight economy.

I can see the value, however, as several used outlets (think KEH) sell many items without the original box. When it comes time to resell or transport having the box & packaging can be worth much more than $10-$20 bucks.

That's about it. A box adds to the impression of newness and care taken with the item offered for sale.
Having said that, I'd love to get the box for the 50 f/1.0 lens......strictly collector's motives. Prepared to pay some good money for it too. Alas, they seem to be more rare than hen's teeth.

I do not even want to say how much I paid for EF 50 mkI NIB (New Old stock). This was my first Canon lens (1990) and I had to have it again, the way I saw it first. In my age nostalgia does not know the price. I also bought LNIB Pentax K1000 recently (my second SLR)

I wouldn't blame it on the economy. People have been selling boxes here for years. Blaming it on the economy just perpetuates the self fulfilling prophecy of doom and gloom.

Where do the boxes come from though? Are you not supposed to include them when you sold the lens/camera body ? Again, if you include the boxes in your sale, it will add to the newness (and potentially the price, too), as Peter mentioned....

Some people have a pile of boxes stacked up from lenses they never intend to sell, so they figure they can turn that pile into a tank of gas or something useful.

People have been selling boxes, sure. The OP asked a question as to why "more" are being sold than normal. Hence my statement, which I still think is a valid response.

You can pull the wool over your eyes and not think things are bad, but I happen to see it from a unique perspective and can see comprehensive financial statistics on 200+ million Americans. Are things as bad as the media or others would have you believe? No, but that doesn't mean things are "good" or due to turn around very quickly.

Since your question has nothing specifically to do with Canon-mount SLR's, why don't you try posting it on the correct forum - Buy & Sell Forum

I've made more money in the stock market since October than I have all year. Just pay attention to the market, and this is an great time to invest. Pretty soon people are going to get tired of all this moaning and groaning. One of the primary reasons why things are not so good right now is because people are not spending much money. This is because we're told that the sky is falling, so people are hoarding money. There is a huge psychological component. With the 24 hour news cycle, I think that the public's attention span will soon be lost, and people go back to spending. In the mean time, it's a great time to get some deals on some stocks. I think it's amusing that some people will sell all their boxes to make $50 or so. They'll probably sell the lenses in a few months anyway, and take a $150 hit because they don't have the boxes. The sky is falling! the sky is falling!

I understand that and I agree wiith that but why didn't they just include the box when they sold the lens, especially since in general they could get more money if the box was included anyway?

I don't know how I ended up with two 20D boxes, anyone wants to buy?

Now that's some residual value ...

In many cases, I think people selling boxes are selling the boxes for the lenses that they currently own. They just never plan on selling the lens, so they figure they can make a few bucks off the boxes and clear out some space to store their beanie baby collection.

You are right Ben, a great time to buy stock. As for boxes, I will not buy a lens w/o the box unless it is the 50 1.8 MK1 since those boxes are impossible to find.

To a certain extent I agree but it is still a gamble, no body was more surprised when woolworth UK went under and quite a few safe names have either gone or are shaky (and I`m not just talking about the high street) If I was worth a million or so then I`d be buying up stock for sure but like most people are just about getting through it`s very dodgy to tie up money that you might need to call on if things don`t cheer up. I certainly wouldn`t want to become a bridge jumper if things go wrong

The OP is not buying or selling anything. So not sure that would be the best place either.

I find your desire to "police" the forum a little unnecessary, and your comment on the verge of rude. Let the moderators handle it.

Maybe you were joking. If so my apologies.

I'm the same way. Having a box is also a very low tech way of making sure the gear isn't stolen. The percentage of lenses stolen in the box must be quite low compared to lenses stolen from camera bags, etc.

Good for selling kit lenses too, which usually come in a white box.

Guess you'll never be able to buy my MK1, I have the box.
